Poundland has already opened 20 former Wilko stores, with the new tranche of openings meaning the retailer will have opened 29 sites in three weeks

Poundland has announced it will open nine former Wilko stores this weekend.

The discount retailer has published the full list of sites it is “working hard to open” on Saturday October 14.

Poundland’s retail director Darren Kay said: “We’re moving at pace because we know how important opening these stores are to local communities.

“While stores will get more extensive refits in next year, we’re proud that another nine former Wilko stores will begin their Poundland journeys this coming weekend.”

The high street chain said each of these 29 new stores will have extensive grocery, household and general merchandise ranges found in every Poundland store.

They will also feature the same Pepco family clothing that is now rolling out to 500-plus of Poundland's existing UK and Ireland stores.

Poundland will close its smaller store at Sheep Street in Bicester and relocate to the larger former Wilko store.

The company says it continues to prioritise former Wilko colleagues for vacancies in their stores, encouraging them to follow Poundland's posts on LinkedIn or visit www.poundlandcareers.co.uk to find details of open roles and how to apply for them.

Administrators for Wilko agreed a deal with Poundland owner Pepco last month to buy up to 71 Wilko properties.

B&M has also entered into an agreement to buy 51 Wilko locations, which are understood to be reopening under the B&M branding.

All 400 Wilko stores have now closed after administrators failed to secure a rescue deal for the whole of the business, however, administrators did reach a deal with The Range to buy the Wilko brand, website and intellectual property.
