Banking app outages are leading to campaigners to call for better physical cash services

Bank customers across the UK have been hit with another surge of banking app outages with Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland being among the financial institutions affected.

Based on data from Downdetector, the app outages are believed to have taken place at around 11am this morning and are believed to have been resolved by this afternoon.

Lloyds Banking Group, which includes Halifax and Bank of Scotland, posted on X: "Our Internet Banking and Mobile Banking is working as normal."

This comes after a wave of app and payment outages which has affected the ability of banks and businesses to carry out services.

As a result of this, campaigners for cash access are hitting back at the high street banks for inadequate online services and for closing branches.

Since 2015, more than 6,000 bank branch closures have taken place across the UK, according to research conducted by consumer champion Which?.

Martin Quinn, the director of Campaign for Cash, told GB News that improving access to physical cash services will prevent these issues from taking place in the future.

He explained: "Here we go again. Our overreliance on technology and apps again is leaving consumers frustrated.

"Cash is needed now more than ever, but trouble is banks are closing branches at an alarming rate and free-to-use ATMs are becoming rarer

“The beauty of cash is it doesn’t crash."

According to Downdetectoor reports of Lloyds Bank app outages surged to 2,317 by 11am with 63 per cent of reports sharing the services were inaccessible.

Similarly, Halifax customers were hit by similar issues around the same time with outage reports hitting 3,915 by 10.30am.

Around a third of Halifax customers shared that they were unable to access mobile banking, as well as online banking services.

Furthermore, it appears Bank of England's outage issues started prior to 10am and reached 1,339 under two hours after.

Customers took to social media to share their frustration over this morning's technical issue.

One posted on X: "Do you realise that no transactions are currently being shown on either the Online for Business app, or website? Do you know when this will be rectified?"
