As snow falls across the UK and icy cold temperatures force Brits to switch their heating on, the best thermostat temperature that will save you money and keep your home warm has been revealed.

Preparing your home for winter could be a stressful experience due to the cost implications of heating your home, but the experts at Energy.gov have outlined the “ideal” temperature to set your thermostat.


Setting it to 68 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re at home is recommended, as it is a good room temperature while you’re awake at home.

It is recommended that you lower the temperature while you’re asleep or away.

Doing this by seven to 10 degrees for eight hours a day could reduce your annual heating expenses by as much as 10 percent, Constellation reports.

According to EnergyHub, for each degree you lower your heat, you can save three percent or more on heating costs.

Britain experienced its coldest night of the year on Sunday as temperatures below minus 15C were experienced.

The Met Office recorded the temperature at Braemar, Aberdeenshire, while other parts of the country also experienced icy cold conditions.

Bear South East Trunk Roads tweeted that a minus 11.3C road surface temperature and air temperatures of minus 14.7C were recorded on the A702.

A Met Office yellow weather warning of snow and ice for the north of Scotland is in force until midday on Monday while a warning of ice and fog in Dumfries and Galloway is valid until 11am.

And yellow warnings of snow and ice have been issued for northern Scotland from midday on Tuesday until noon on Thursday.

The weather caused disruption to travel on Monday and also led to school closures in the Highlands.
