Aldi has topped the list as the UK’s cheapest supermarket once again for the beginning of 2024 with consumers in line to make big savings if they switch to the store, research suggests.
The German grocer is continuing its reign as the most affordable option for shoppers, according to analysis by consumer champion Which?.
The prices of 72 popular grocery items in January across the country’s eight largest supermarkets were compared, with the total cost for an Aldi shop averaging at £129.24.
Examples of the type of products that were compared include milk, cheese and Heinz baked beans, among others.

Here is a breakdown of the how much supermarket shopping costs on average at the UK’s biggest supermarkets in January, according to Which?:
- Aldi – average shop comes to £129.24
- Lidil – average shop comes to £132.27
- Asda – average shop comes to £145.75
- Tesco – average shop comes to £149.11
- Sainsbury’s – average shop comes to £153.50
- Morrisons – average shop comes to £156.05
- Ocado – average shop comes to £157.15
- Waitrose – average shop comes to £170.44.
Overall, Aldi has the lowest final bill for the month, beating rival discount retailer Lidl by just £3.13.
The price of the same shop at Waitrose came to £170.44 on average, making it nearly a third more expensive than Aldi.
Of the big four supermarkets - Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda - the latter had the cheapest shop for January at £145.75.
According to Which?’s food and drink inflation tracker, the cost of some everyday groceries has more than doubled over the past year.
Grocery inflation for the year in the group’s tracker fell slightly to 8.5 per cent in the three months to December 31, 2023 which is massively lower than its peak of 17 per cent in April of the same year.
It was confirmed last month that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate for December rose slightly to four per cent which reignited concerns about the cost of living.

PAHowever, experts have highlighted there are still reasons for shoppers to “feel more optimistic” about prices.
Andy Mielczarek, the founder and CEO of SmartSave, explained: “This is a timely reminder that there's work to be done to eradicate the threat of sticky inflation.
“That said, the current rate of inflation, when viewed alongside an average weekly wage growth of 6.6 per cent and a base rate of 5.25 per cent, there are reasons for consumers to feel more optimistic when surveying the economic landscape.
“Many more consumers will find themselves in a position to consider savings and investments once again, and those who are are now able to assess the best inflation-beating options out there.”
