Coventry Airport has closed as of June 11, 2026

A UK airport has closed down after 90 years of operations, with all flights to and from its historic runways being cancelled.

Coventry Airport, formerly known as Baginton Aerodrome, is being replaced with a multi-billion pound energy plant.

The airport is primarily known for flight training and chartered flights, and it boasts an impressive history.

Opening in the 1930s, the site was used as a fighter airfield during World War II and was later used for commercial and passenger flights.

However, all commercial flights from Coventry Airport were cancelled in 2008, with the site almost exclusively being reserved for chartered travel.

When commercial flights still operated from the airfield, holidaymakers could travel to the Channel Islands, Poland, France, Italy, and Spain.

Over the years, Coventry Airport has been known as the hub from which many famous figures in history arrived in Britain.

Notably, Pope John Paul II was greeted by a crowd of 350,000 people when he arrived at the airport in 1982.

Other special guests over the years have included boyband Take That, which the airport reminisced about in a post on its Facebook page.

The airport shared: "Those nice gentlemen from Take That flew into Coventry Airport this evening and when they found out that they were our last ever passengers on our last booked commercial flight prior to closing, they insisted on a photograph with ground crew to mark the occasion.

"Normally, the ground crew would turn down such a request as we don’t like people using our image to further their careers, but on this special occasion, and because they asked nicely, we agree."

A statement on Coventry Airport’s website said: “In November 2025, Coventry Airport submitted an application to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) giving formal notification of the intention to cease runway operations from June 11, 2026.

"In accordance with relevant regulations, all affected parties have been notified."

With the airport's closure, the site will be used to host GreenPower Park, which is set to be a £2.5billion battery and clean energy scheme.

The initiative aims to create up to 6,000 jobs and put Coventry on the map when it comes to Net Zero energy.
