Bank branch closures are ramping up across Britain

Santander is set to shut down multiple bank branches this month in a disappointing development for the high street financial institution's customers.

Due to the rise in online banking and changing consumer habits, bank branch closures have increasingly become the norm across the UK.

In June 2025 alone, Santander is planning to close 23 locations for good later this month with customers being urged to check if their local branch is impacted.

It should be noted that customers can still connect with a Santander community banker if their local outlet is shutting down, who make regular visits to local community venues.

High street shoppersHigh streets have been hit by a wave of bank branch closures since the pandemic, on top of banks shutting downPA

According to Santander, the banking group is evolving its existing branch network to reflect customers opting to use digital banking services.

The bank stated: "Our mix of full-service branches, work cafés, counter-free branches, and reduced-hours sites aims to balance digital banking with face-to-face support.

"Closing a branch is always a difficult decision, and we carefully assess when and where to do this to minimise the impact on customers."

Despite these wave of closures, Santander claims 93 per cent of the UK population will remain within 10 miles of a branch.
