Retinoids have been hailed as a skin care staple for a youthful complexion

Glass skin, one of the latest top beauty trends, is often achieved by incorporating a type of retinoid into skin care routines to aid thorough exfoliation.

However, retinoids can appear fairly imposing due to their consequences if used incorrectly. Thankfully, a skin care guru has weighed in on the best ways to deploy such products to reap maximum benefits.

Kristin, who goes by @skinbykristin on TikTok, said: "I have the holy grail method in terms of using a retinoid on your skin to get the best results, with no irritation. It is tried and true."

The master aesthetician has spent years in the skin business, assuring followers that her regimen is "king" and can be used on all skin types.

Retinoids encapsulate a wide variety of products, including retinols and retinals - plenty of which are available on the high street - although more concentrated retinoid products may be prescribed by your doctor.

Although younger skin has a 30-day cell renewal cycle, the process takes longer as you get older, which, in turn, contributes to ageing.

Kristin added: "That is where a retinoid comes into play because it's going to turn those cells over quicker."

However, without an exfoliant or an acid, the old cells will "sit on your skin and just get trapped and you're going to have more congestion, more irritation, more blackheads", she warned.

LATEST SKIN CARE TIPS AND TRICKS

As a result, the aesthetician divulged her "secret to glass skin", declaring: "Skin likes actives and it also likes hydration, nourishment and moisture - these things are very important.

"Six days out of the week, I do my method; one day a week, I keep things light, I keep things airy."

On the seventh day, a hydrating mask or oil may be deployed, with Kristin adding that she sometimes doesn't wash her face in the morning on that day, claiming that it's necessary to "let the skin breathe".

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Kristin applies a retinoid and, on the alternate days, she deploys an acid to get rid of any dead cells on the skin's surface.

The most used acids that complement retinoid use include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, peptides and ceramides - all of which are available on the high street.

Explaining her routine, she said: "The retinoid is turning our cells over, then we go in with the acid that’s going to eat away that dead skin so the next night you're fresh and ready to go.

"Put a retinoid on, it loves it, it takes it, it does its thing. The next night, you're sloughing it off. That is the way."

Backing up the influencer, the Cleveland Clinic endorsed the use of retinoids, declaring that they unclog pores, exfoliate skin, and stimulate collagen production. As such, it's an excellent way to rid your visage of fine lines and wrinkles, creating a fresh appearance.

However, Kristin did add that it is just as important to listen to how your skin responds to the routine due to the unique nature of our complexions.

And before using a new skin care product, it's always best to consult a dermatologist, as they can offer tailored guidance on the right product for you.
