As winter creeps slowly towards us, interiors guru Kate Conrad reveals how homeowners can transform their spaces into cosy yet chic winter havens

With the nights drawing in and the temperature dropping, we're all spending more time in our homes.

This makes winter the perfect time to refresh your interior, updating it with on-trend additions and features to make your space feel warm and inviting.

Winter can also be a more practical time to make changes. With the holidays long gone, it can be easier to schedule painters and decorators or to put time aside to do some DIY without worrying about missing the sun.

Winter is also traditionally the season of renewal, where we celebrate the return of the sun (winter solstice), and it is seen as a turning point for setting new intentions and preparing for the coming year.

But where do you start? There are four current trends I'd advise looking at for inspiration.

Jewel tones

Forest greens, midnight blues, and rich berry reds like burgundy and damson are on trend this winter, bringing elegance and luxury into the home.

With colour drenching another key style, you can combine repainting walls and replacing curtains with blankets, throws, and furniture pieces.

Biophilic designs

Biophilic design – or bringing nature indoors – encourages the use of natural materials like wood, stone, leather, and wool to bring the outdoors in and create a calming atmosphere.

Simple additions like wooden picture frames made from exquisite mango wood highlight rich, warm tones with the unique patterns of nature.

Layered textures

You can mix and match various textures, from matte finishes to plush textiles and natural materials like clay and suedes, to avoid the mundane and add depth to spaces.

Transform your living space into a haven of comfort and style with throws and cushions, such as rabbit fur cushions, to offer a plush, velvety texture.

Whether placed on a sofa, bed, or armchair, they add a touch of affluence and warmth.

Statement lighting

Brighten up your home in every way by embracing the statement lighting trend.

Key styles include the use of natural materials like rattan and stone, or this water hyacinth pendant lampshade, to bring natural shape and softness to your ceiling lighting.

Pair with warm-toned bulbs for a cosy glow. Layering multiple light sources and focusing on warm metals like gold and copper are also bang on trend.

It brings a touch of exotic elegance and sophisticated glamour to your home.
