The supermarket's new carrier bags are waterproof and perform "really well" with frozen food and rain, but some customers aren't convinced

Iceland will introduce new carrier bags for shoppers but some people who shop in the supermarket are skeptical about the new product.

The supermarket chain's new bags are set to be more durable than the old ones, despite being made of paper.

Executive chairman of Iceland Richard Walker took to X with a picture of the new bag, accompanied by the word "sexy" and a recycling symbol.

Dubious customers questioned the invention, but the Iceland boss was quick to dismiss claims that the bag wouldn't work.

One commented that they'll be "no good when it’s pouring down with rain", to which Walker responded: "Waterproof!"

A second customer had the same concern: "Really useful in the UK weather when it's raining."

Another worried shopper claimed: "Have you not tried the Morrisons ones? With frozen food in they get soaked fast from the inside out and fall apart! Not a good idea really."

But the Iceland boss tried to squash any fears that the bags wouldn't be effective.

He answered: "This is new technology, waterproof and performs really well with frozen food and rain!"

Some customers were pleased to hear about the new bags. One took to X, stating: "Richard, you spoil us." Another said: "Looks much better."

An Iceland spokesperson confirmed that the new bags are currently being rolled out across UK stores and will replace the current bags available.

"At Iceland, we have been rolling out a new and improved design on our existing paper bags. The new paper bags have been designed with new technology.

"They are splash-proof, easier to carry and reuse, and perfect for carrying frozen food," said the spokesperson. The new paper bags will set customers back 30p.

Iceland shoppers can also purchase reusable bags from the supermarket. On the official Iceland website, the Iceland Woven Reusable Bag retails for £1. The Iceland Insulated Bag goes for £1.75.

In other Iceland news, the supermarket has caused controversy by making a major change to its Hot Cross Buns.

Iceland is running a trial where Hot Cross Buns are decorated with a tick as opposed to a cross.
