A doctor shares top tips to help smooth skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines

What you put into your body and what you put on your skin are both important when trying to slow down the visible ageing process.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a doctor advised keeping your skin hydrated from the inside out.

Retinol was praised as a product to apply every night by Dr Patrick Davis, who is a facial plastic surgeon.

He told GB News: "This powerhouse improves collagen and diminishes fine lines."

Indeed, a study published in the National Library of Medicine reviewed improvements on naturally aged skin with retinol.

Over 24 weeks, 36 elderly participants found topical 0.4% retinol lotion significantly reduced fine line wrinkles associated with natural ageing, improvements in wrinkle severity, skin roughness and overall ageing signs.

However, it is worth noting this is a harsh product that requires care when using. It is generally not recommended for people in their teens or 20s, and you must moisturise well and wear an SPF when using it.

Dr Davis echoed this advice with his other top tips and told everyone to wear sunscreen every single day.

He said: "The sun is the number one enemy. To keep ageing at bay, apply SPF 30+ even on overcast days."

This comes as another doctor delved into the ageing impact of the sun, noting up to 80 per cent of visible ageing can come from the sun.

Dr Davis added that moisturising well is also key - "even oily skin needs moisture to remain looking smooth and feel soft". Hyaluronic acid serum was another hydrating product he recommended.

As well as applying these products every day, it is important to hydrate inside as well as outside and drink plenty of water.

Dehydration shows itself on the skin and can make the face appear sunken, with fine lines more visible.

A study published in Skin Research and Technology found that increased water consumption led to improved skin hydration, increased skin thickness, and enhanced skin barrier function.

All of this contributed to a healthier and more youthful-looking complexion, according to the research. For more retinol anti-ageing advice, an expert discussed why it is a "game-changing" ingredient to reduce fine lines and restore a "more youthful" appearance.
