A makeup artist shared why moisturiser can be a fantastic anti-ageing tool

When it comes to looking younger, women have plenty of options - and something as simple as a wardrobe revamp or a new haircut works wonders.

According to a makeup artist, women over 60 can shave years off their age with some key skin care tips.

Ladies in this age group should ensure they moisturise and prime their skin rather than start with their foundation.

While getting older brings new life benefits and experiences, there's nothing wrong with wanting to look more youthful.

On her YouTube channel, makeup artist Glam Girl Gabi told women over 60 to "properly prep your canvas" with hydrating products.

She explained that when women get to their 60s, they may notice that their skin has "really started to change". This is because the first two layers - the dermis and epidermis - "thin and flatten out".

The expert explained that the result of this is drier, itchier skin, with wrinkles, age spots, creases and bruises becoming more visible.

Glam Girl Gabi continued: "Hydration is a noticeable issue for almost every woman in this age group."

She shared that it is "so important" to prep the skin before applying makeup. The makeup guru said: "There is nothing more ageing than dry, crepey skin, and your skin will likely look that way if you apply foundation directly on top of an un-moisturised base."

Gabi suggested applying a moisturiser, letting this "sink in a little", then adding a primer to see true hydrating benefits.

The skin experts at CeraVe explained what a moisturiser is and how it benefits the skin. They said: "Moisturisers are cream or gel-textured skincare products which contain a blend of humectants and emollients.

"Humectants are skincare ingredients that draw in moisture from the air and surface layers of skin and retain it – hyaluronic acid and glycerin are a couple of widely known examples.

"Emollients also help to trap moisture in skin, and aid in softening skin texture through rich hydration."

As for primer, according to Clinique, this is a "quick, easy way to up your makeup game". The experts said: "A great primer helps makeup apply smoothly and stay in place, and it can also subtly adjust the effect of your finished look. Essentially, it sets the stage for the rest of your makeup."

Makeup artist Gabi recommended primer because it "smooths wrinkles out".

Another crucial skin care product for women over 60 is sun protection. Ensure you apply sunscreen if there is no SPF in your foundation.
