Hair is one of the first things people notice, so finding the right cut and colour is very important

A trip to the hair salon is sometimes all you need to transform your appearance and get a boost of confidence.

Speaking to GB News, an image consultant explained that the wrong haircut or colour can throw off your entire look and even make you look years older.

Luckily, this can be fixed. Choosing cuts that complement your face shape will be the most flattering, according to founder and Image Consultant at The Distinctive Style Atelier, Lizzie Parsons.

She said: "I find that in my image consultancy practice that most women look in the mirror and feel off with their hair, but they don’t quite know why.

"Sometimes they have had well-meaning advice from others that is not working for them, but they don’t know where to start with making changes, and they don’t want to do the wrong thing.

"Hair is in communication with your facial structure. Hair that’s too heavy and one length can pull the face down if it’s not cut sharply enough."

The structure of our face changes with age due to a loss of bone density, fat and skin elasticity, and outdated haircuts can make this more prominent.

For many, this can mean highlighting deeper lines, a loss of volume and skin that sags more than before. However, the right haircut can draw attention to the right places.

Parsons continued: "For some women, when hair has been thinned out or chopped into layers, it can make the face look tired, and can pull focus to looser skin around the jowls.

"What helps, depending on the face shape, is a style that is cut to accentuate the cheekbones or jaw, but with clean ends. The hair should frame the face and not make it feel pulled down."

The most flattering haircut will vary person to person, but mature women should opt for styles that use length, layers and angles to accentuate their cheekbones and jawlines.

Think cheekbone-length bobs, sweeping curtain bangs, long face-framing layers or - for something more adventurous - a pixie cut.

Hairstylist at BACKSTAGE, Tetiana Hirenko, agreed. She shared her top anti-ageing haircut suggestions that will suit everyone.

Hirenko said: "A great haircut can take years off your appearance, particularly in your 40s, 50s and 60s, when the focus should shift towards styles that enhance natural features, restore softness and create movement.

"The key is to work with your face shape, hair texture and overall aesthetic, while avoiding anything too heavy or dated."

For something that will suit nearly everyone, she suggested a soft, layered bob - "it's universally flattering, adding lift and volume where it is often needed most".

She continued: "The movement around the face softens features and creates a fresh, youthful glow. It is a timeless style that feels polished yet modern, rather than overly 'set' or rigid."
