Make-up can be used to enhance natural beauty, cover up small imperfections and create a more youthful appearance overall.
But not all products are created equal. Speaking to GB News, a make-up artist warned of the mistakes to avoid, especially for those over the age of 40.
How make-up sits on the skin changes in every stage of life, so it is important to be aware of this and update the items in your make-up bag when necessary.
According to make-up artist at Cult Beauty, Amy Rostas, the secret to an anti-ageing routine comes from finding the right products and applying them correctly.

Unflattering shades, cakey formulas and the wrong application methods can add years

In general, skin becomes paler and thinner with age. This happens at a rate of at least six to eight per cent per decade after the age of 30, so it is worth regularly checking the foundation shades you are using.
Rostas said: "Mature skin can sometimes look washed out or dull, so swapping cool pink tones for warmer yellow-based shades can make a noticeable difference. A subtle hint of warmth helps brighten the complexion, bringing life back into skin and creating a fresh, healthy glow."
Hydration is also vital when trying to achieve a youthful glow. This starts with lifestyle choices and a good skin care routine, but is highlighted by the make-up you apply to your face.
The expert suggested avoiding powders as these can highlight fine lines, wrinkles and any dryness on the face. She said: "Heavy powder can settle into fine lines, highlight dryness and leave skin looking flat.
HOW TO LOOK YOUNGER
"Cream and liquid textures are much more forgiving, helping skin look fresh, smooth and radiant. They blend more seamlessly into the complexion and create a youthful, dewy finish."
Many make-up counters will let you sample different products, so take advantage of this when searching for the right shades and formulas. Once you have the right products, think about the application.
This is one of the most important rules when it comes to anti-ageing make-up, according to the Rostas, who said "blending is everything".
She added: "Harsh lines or obvious edges can age make-up instantly, while seamless blending creates a softer, skin-like finish. Using a damp sponge or gentle tapping motions helps everything melt together for a fresh, airbrushed glow."

Once you have the right products, think about the application

She said: "The delicate skin around the eyes is often one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, and make-up can crease more easily here.
"Prepping the eyelids before applying make-up helps create a smoother base, keeping everything in place and helping eye make-up look fresher for longer. As skin becomes thinner over time, dark circles and puffiness can become more noticeable.
"Using light-reflecting, peach-toned correctors and blending gently with fingertips can soften shadows and brighten the under-eye area, creating a fresher, more rested look."
