Heading to the salon for a cut and colour is more than just a pampering day out; it can help shave years off your appearance.
Not all hairstyles are created equal, however, and an expert has warned against dated looks that can age you.
This is according to the founder of Urban Betty Salon, Chelle Neff, who said finding the right cut and colour can transform your face.
But what worked for you in your 20s might not work in your 50s, she warned, so keep your style current to complement you at all stages of life.

'Softer layers, movement, and face-framing pieces are what keep a look modern'
| GETTYThe expert told GB News: "Most women don’t look older because of ageing, they look older because their hair is outdated. I see it every day in the salon. The wrong cut or colour can add 10 years instantly, while the right one can take it off just as fast.
"The biggest ageing mistake is holding onto a shape that no longer fits your face. As we age, our bone structure and skin change, so your haircut has to evolve too. Softer layers, movement, and face-framing pieces are what keep a look modern. Harsh lines and heavy, one-length cuts tend to drag the face down.”
Haircuts are not one-size-fits-all, but some styles can be universally unflattering. For example, overstyled hair or flat locks.
HOW TO LOOK YOUNGER
Neff continued: “It’s not about having short or long hair, it’s about whether it looks current. Overly curled-under ends, stiff volume, or flat, lifeless styling are dead giveaways. Updating your styling technique is often more important than changing your length."
Opting for layered, face-framing cuts can be the most complimentary. Once you've found the perfect chop, think about enhancing your features with a flattering colour.
The expert added: “Flat colour is one of the fastest ways to age yourself. Hair that looks expensive has dimension. Even subtle brightness around the face can lift your entire complexion and make you look more refreshed.

The most flattering haircut for you will change with age

“You don’t need to look younger, you need to look current. That’s the real anti-ageing strategy.”
For those going grey, a hairstylist with 20 years of experience shared flattering colouring tips to get the most out of the colour.
