It's no secret that our face and body require regular sunscreen application, but what about our hair? According to one expert, it's a non-negotiable for sensational strands and a healthy scalp this summer

As Britain prepares for another spell of sweltering weather with temperatures forecast to climb above 30°C in parts of the country, a medical expert has issued a stark warning about the potential damage to hair and scalp health during extreme heat.

Dr Gizem Seymenoglu, a hair loss specialist and medical aesthetician with Longevita Hair Transplant, cautioned that heatwaves can cause both direct and indirect harm to hair, potentially leading to increased hair loss and even infections.

The specialist explained that intense UV radiation during heatwaves accelerates the breakdown of keratin, a crucial protein that provides hair with "strength, elasticity, and overall health".

"Degradation of it can lead to dry, brittle hair that tends to break more easily," Dr Seymenoglu warned.

The extreme heat compounds this damage by removing moisture from hair strands. The specialist warned that high temperatures can also compromise the hair cuticle, which serves as the outermost protective barrier for hair shafts.

Dr Seymenoglu highlighted particular concerns about scalp damage from sun exposure, noting that sunburn significantly increases the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma.

"We all know that prolonged sun exposure can cause sunburn, but sunburn can increase your risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma.

"Individuals with alopecia should be especially cautious, as the absence of hair removes a crucial barrier against the sun's rays, increasing vulnerability," the doctor warned.

She stressed that UV rays can penetrate through hair, making sun protection essential even for those with full heads of hair.

The specialist emphasised that everyone should take precautions to protect their scalp during extreme heat.

For those enjoying scorching summer days by the pool, the aesthetician also warned about the risk chlorine poses to your strands.

"While chlorine keeps pool water germ-free, it can be quite harsh and stripping for your hair," she noted.

"As well as causing dryness and hair breakage, it can fade your hair's colour," she added.

Dr Seymenoglu recommended using spray-on or powder sunscreen for hair and scalp protection, reapplying after swimming.

She advised wearing hats, seeking shade during peak sun hours, and using hydrating hair masks or serums containing hyaluronic acid.

"It's also important to keep the hair hydrated and moisturised," she said, emphasising the importance of drinking plenty of water and wearing swim caps in pools.
