With October well underway, British gardeners have started to look towards preparing their garden for the colourful blooms of spring.
A quintessential springtime staple for many, daffodils have persisted as a firm favourite among flower fans, with its broad variety of colours, shapes and sizes brightening up bouquets and back gardens alike.
Thankfully, horticultural specialist David Denyer has named the best time to plant these bulbs, which is equally helpful for all sorts of spring bulbs, from tulips to snowdrops.

| GETTYWith more than three decades of floristry experience in tow, Mr Denyer said: "The best time to plant daffodil bulbs is from September through November, while the soil still holds some warmth but before it becomes too wet in winter."
The timing allows the bulbs to establish robust root systems, which are essential for vigorous growth and abundant spring displays.
However, the intricacies of bulb planting extend beyond timing; proper soil selection and preparation prove crucial for bountiful daffodil blooms when March rolls around.
"Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with soil that drains well," the guru advised.
Heavy clay soils require grit amendments or, alternatively, gardeners might consider raised beds or containers to avoid waterlogging.

Sandy soils benefit from compost additions to improve moisture retention. "Bulbs should be planted around three times their own depth, usually 10 to 15cm, and spaced about 7 to 10cm apart," Mr Denyer instructed.
"Place them with the pointed tip facing upwards, as this is where the shoots will emerge from."
To achieve a more natural garden display, planting the flowers in clusters, rather than strict rows, is the preferred method, the horticulturalist suggested. He recommends groupings of three, five or seven bulbs for a balanced look.
Additionally, planting different daffodil varieties together that bloom at various times can prolong flowering periods, making springtime all the more enjoyable after a dark and gloomy winter.

| PAContainer gardeners might employ what Mr Denyer dubbed the "lasagne method", involving "layering bulbs at different depths".
"The deeper bulbs flower first, followed by the middle and top layers, giving you waves of flowers over a longer period," he explained.
Then, proper aftercare ensures spring success for those bulbs planted in autumn, which demands a thorough watering to support the soil settling around them as well as encourage root growth.
After that step is completed, little intervention is necessary, as Britain's rainy climate can be entrusted to keep the bulbs moist well into the next year.
