Two products have been recalled due to an undeclared ingredient

Asda and Morrisons have issued recalls for a chocolate snack that could cause abdominal pain, headaches, and brain fog.

In recent notices to customers, shoppers who have purchased Myprotein Gooey Filled Cookie Double Chocolate & Caramel products were warned of serious health risks.

Two variations of the product have been recalled due to undeclared wheat protein, which poses a risk to those with coeliac disease, and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.

The recall forms part of a wider alert previously issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which affected various retailers who stock the sports nutrition brand.

Tesco and Boots have also recalled the potentially harmful biscuits as a precautionary measure to protect specific customers from the undeclared ingredient.

In a notice to shoppers, Asda said: "Myprotein is initiating a voluntary recall of Myprotein Gooey Filled Cookie - Double Chocolate & Caramel, 75g (Single Cookie) and 12 x 75g (Box of 12) due to the presence of undeclared Wheat Protein in an ingredient supplied for the manufacture of this cookie.

"This could be a risk to people with a wheat allergy or coeliac disease."

The retailer advised customers "not to consume" the product but to return it to the store from which it was purchased to receive a full refund.

To ensure an easy returns process for shoppers, Asda stated that no receipts will be required.

Customers seeking further information about the product recall can contact Asda Customer Relations on 0800 952 0101 for additional assistance and guidance.

This comes just days after Asda alerted shoppers to a critical product safety issue.

Morrisons and Iceland issued similar recall notices regarding the Myprotein cookies, Morrisons for the 75g (Single Cookie) and Iceland for both affected products. For further information, Britons can consult their dedicated recall pages.

It's important to note that the cookies are not a risk to all consumers, but only those with coeliac disease, and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten.

For information on gluten intolerance and coeliac disease, health insurance company Bupa provides a detailed guide. For information on wheat allergy, consult Allergy UK's dedicated guidance.

Experts explained that the gastrointestinal symptoms of gluten intolerance and coeliac disease can be similar. These include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, and constipation.

Regarding an IgE-mediated wheat allergy (immediate), Allergy UK experts explained that reactions are most common in children, although they can also develop in adults.

Symptoms can occur from within minutes to up to two hours after ingestion and include rhinitis, asthma, hives (urticaria), swelling (angio-oedema) or anaphylaxis. There may also be vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and a flare-up of eczema.

Anaphylaxis, as defined by Anaphylaxis UK, is a "serious and often sudden allergic reaction" that is "potentially life-threatening". It always requires an immediate emergency response.

Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis and non-IgE-mediated allergy (delayed) are other forms of wheat allergy.
