Shoppers who have an allergy to mustard or celery have been called to action

Lidl has become the second major British supermarket to pull Calbee crisps from shelves following concerns over unlabelled allergens.

The discount retailer is recalling both Hot & Spicy Crisps and Pizza Crisps manufactured by Calbee Group UK Ltd, urging customers who have purchased these products to "dispose of [them] immediately".

This action follows Tesco's own recall of the same crisp varieties, with both supermarket chains responding to the presence of mustard and celery that were not declared on product packaging.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed the items represent a potential health hazard for allergy sufferers.

The recall affects 55g packets of Calbee Hot & Spicy Crisps with best-before dates extending to June 5, 2026, which may contain mustard not mentioned on the label.

Similarly, the 55g Pizza Crisps variety has been withdrawn due to undeclared celery, with affected batches carrying best-before dates up to April 28, 2026.

The batch information can be found printed on the reverse of each packet.

Lidl explained that the possible presence of these ingredients (without mention on packets) may affect consumers with an allergy to these foods.

The FSA has formally classified both products as presenting a "possible health risk" for consumers with sensitivities to mustard and celery.

Officials noted that Calbee Group UK Ltd has reached out to allergy support organisations to ensure their members are informed of the recall.

Lidl has emphasised that customer safety remains paramount, stating: "If you have bought one of these products and believe you may be affected, do not consume it. Instead, please dispose of the product."

The retailer added: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation."

Shoppers can return affected items to any Lidl store for a full refund without needing to produce a receipt.

Customers seeking further information may contact Calbee's consumer care team directly at 0330 660 0015 or via email at consumercare@calbee.co.uk.

Tesco customers can likewise obtain refunds at their nearest branch without a receipt.

About allergy alerts

The FSA explained: "Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. Then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect, or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert."
