Consumers have been urged not to drink the implicated batches

Illva Saronno S.p.A has urgently recalled its popular Disaronno Originale liqueur across England, Scotland, and Ireland due to the possible presence of glass in certain bottles.

The Italian manufacturer identified that "micro-fragments of glass" may be present in some 700ml bottles due to a fault on one of its production lines.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed the safety alert yesterday, stating: "Illva Saronno S.p.A is recalling Disaronno Originale because of the possible presence of small pieces of glass within some bottles of the product, which could make it unsafe to drink."

Consumers are being warned not to consume the affected products.

Seven specific batch codes have been identified as potentially affected: 25374, 25375, 25381, 25382, 25435, 25442, and 25444.

The recall applies exclusively to the 700ml format of the Italian-produced amaretto, with the EAN code 8001110016303.

Retailers stocking the affected batches will display notices at the point of sale informing customers of the recall and outlining the steps they should take.

Those who have purchased bottles from the affected batches should refrain from drinking the liqueur and instead return it to the retailer where it was bought.

A full refund or replacement will be provided to customers returning the product.

The FSA's announcement follows a similar alert from Ireland's food safety watchdog, the FSAI, which urged consumers "not to drink the implicated batches" (25371 and 25372).

Retailers were also requested to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at the point of sale.

For any queries regarding the recall, consumers may contact the company directly via email at contatti@illva.com.

The manufacturer expressed regret over the situation, emphasising its commitment to customers.

Illva Saronno S.p.A stated: "We apologise for any inconvenience. Consumer safety is our priority."

About product recalls and withdrawals

The FSA explained: "If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product).

"The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

"In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers."

The Disaronno scare comes just days after Tesco issued multiple food recalls, urging shoppers: "Do not eat them."

Bao buns and crisps were flagged due to the presence of undeclared allergens, posing a health risk to those with allergies and intolerances.

Food alerts such as recalls and withdrawals should always be taken seriously to ensure your safety.
