Asda has issued an urgent recall of its Exceptional by Asda Beer Battered Cod Fishcakes over concerns the product may be contaminated with plastic or metal fragments.
The 290g packs pose a potential safety hazard to consumers, prompting the supermarket chain to pull the item from shelves. Shoppers who have purchased the fishcakes should check the use-by dates on their packaging immediately.
The recall covers products with use-by dates spanning May 1 to May 5, 2026. Items bearing any other dates are not affected by this safety notice.
The presence of plastic or metal pieces renders the fishcakes unsafe for consumption, according to the Food Standards Agency. Customers who have already bought the affected product are being urged not to eat it under any circumstances.

The supermarket has apologised to affected customers for any disruption caused by the recall.
In a statement, the retailer said: "Exceptional by Asda Beer Battered Fishcakes are being recalled due to the possible presence of plastic or metal foreign contamination."
Asda confirmed that only products with the specified use-by dates are impacted by the safety alert.

Since January 2026, the retailer has been among several major high street names forced to withdraw more than 30 toy products after testing uncovered asbestos contamination.

Tesco, Primark, Aldi, M&S, Argos, Matalan, Smyths Toys, and The Entertainer also removed affected items from sale.
The contaminated products, including sand art sets and stretchy rubber toys, are documented on the Office for Product Safety and Standards website.
Product safety minister Kate Dearden expressed alarm at the situation, stating: "It is staggering that toys are being sold with asbestos, and I know how concerning this will be for parents."
