Japanese and South Korean automakers were found to have the most reliable second-hand models

New research has revealed which second-hand cars available on the UK market are the most reliable, with a number of the most popular brands making the shortlist.

Based on the analysis of 1.6 million different data points for used cars between three and 15 years old, the Toyota Yaris has been crowned as the most reliable second-hand vehicle.

With an impressive score of 89.2 out of 100 on the Warrantywise Reliability Index, the Yaris has improved on its table-topping score of 89 from last year.

Drivers who get their hands on a used Yaris will see average repair costs of around £888.90, with experts highlighting its durability and consistency.

The Yaris has become one of Britain's best-selling models over the last 20 years, with it continuing to be a stalwart among Toyota's market lineup.

In 2025, The Toyota Yaris Cross was the manufacturer's best-selling car in the B-SUV segment, with the standard Yaris variant placing in second.

Owners of the Yaris can attest to its fuel economy, strong performance and general reliability, especially compared to other models in the same price bracket.

Antony Diggins, managing director of Warrantywise, emphasised how important it was for motorists to look at the reliability of a vehicle when considering the total cost of ownership.

He said: "Our Reliability Index helps give consumers a clearer picture of how different used vehicles perform over time, using real-world insights drawn from the used cars we support every day.

"Models like the Toyota Yaris build a strong reputation for reliability year after year, which is why they remain such popular choices in the used car market."

Mr Diggins praised Toyota for its consistency across all of its models, with the brand often considered to be one of the safest options when drivers buy a second-hand car.

Alongside the Yaris, the Aygo, RAV4, and Hilux place in third, fourth and sixth place respectively.

Other East Asian brands also dominate the list, including the Kia Picanto in second, the Suzuki Vitara in joint seventh, and the Kia Ceed and Suzuki Swift, both of which were tied for ninth in the reliability rankings.

The Kia Picanto was found to have the cheapest average repair request at just £403.49, while the Toyota Hilux had the most expensive repair request, with drivers being asked to fork out a huge £6,503.57.

Mr Diggins continued, saying: "What’s even more striking about this year's Index is the breadth of the top 10. From city runarounds to family SUVs and genuine working trucks, these are all very different vehicles united by the same quality: they hold up.

"At a time when repair costs continue to rise, and household budgets are under real pressure, knowing which cars are most likely to keep running without significant expense is more valuable than ever."
