More than 220 NHS sites around the UK will benefit from the Government's funding boost

Labour's £63million electric vehicle charging funding boost will help the NHS save millions of pounds every year.

To help supercharge the UK's electric vehicle infrastructure, the Government has pledged £63million for new chargers to bring down costs for drivers and help more people have faith in zero emission vehicles.

The funding includes £25million for local authorities to expand access to at-home chargers via the use of cross-pavement charging gulleys.

Drivers will also see changes around the UK with new EV-specific signage along major A-roads and motorways.

Around £8million of the funding will be given to the NHS as part of a major sustainability upgrade that will impact over 200 sites.

Figures suggest the NHS will be able to save millions of pounds a year, with these funds being invested in patient care.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander praised the new Government funding, saying that the charging progress would boost the economy and help more people switch.

She added: "I'm proud that through this boost, we are helping deliver cheaper bills for families, massive savings for the NHS to reinvest in patient care, and thousands of new green jobs."

Over 1,200 new charging sockets will be installed at NHS locations around the UK, which will help slash bills at hospitals over the next two decades.

It will also slash the value of bills for NHS providers with reduced fuel costs and a drop in the amount of money spent on repairs.

Health Minister Karin Smyth said: "This is a win-win: cheaper travel for the NHS and cleaner air for our communities.

"As part of our Plan for Change, we're investing in green energy to build an NHS fit for the future - cutting pollution and saving millions in fuel costs."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The NHS Chargepoint Accelerator Scheme will see trusts awarded money by the Department for Transport to install EV chargers to support their fleets.

The first round of funding has already been allocated, with hundreds of sites being granted access to the financial boost.

Chris Gormley, chief sustainability officer at the NHS, said the new funding would build on projects that are in action across the sector to reduce emissions and save money.

He continued, saying: "This new £8million investment, across 62 NHS Trusts and around 224 sites, supports the renewed commitment in the Government’s 10-Year Health Plan to deliver a more sustainable NHS while also helping hospitals to save millions on fuel and maintenance costs and reducing air pollution."
