The couple announced their split via social media

Forbes Masson, the 62-year-old actor recognised for his appearances in EastEnders and The Crown, has announced the end of his marriage to singer Melanie Masson following more than a quarter of a century together.

The couple, who have two grown-up children, revealed their separation through social media posts on Wednesday, with both describing the decision as mutual and deeply painful.

"It is with a deep sadness and a very heavy and sore heart that I have to announce that after over 25 years together, Melanie and I are going our separate ways," Mr Masson wrote on Instagram.

He added: "I wish Melanie only love and happiness and hope she finds it. It has been a very difficult decision for both of us."

Ms Masson, 57, who rose to prominence on The X Factor in 2012, issued her own statement confirming the pair had reached this decision some time ago.

"Forbes and I created two beautiful humans who we will forever love, cherish, support and nurture," she wrote. "They are now young adults who understand and accept our decision and remain secure in our love for them."

The former X Factor contestant stressed that despite the end of their romantic relationship, their bond would endure.

"This was a mutual decision, and although our relationship has ended, our friendship will remain. We will always be family," Ms Masson stated.

Mr Masson also apologised to relatives and close friends, learning of the separation through his public announcement rather than privately.

Following his announcement, Mr Masson shared a further update, thanking supporters for their kind messages whilst revealing his current whereabouts.

He disclosed that he is presently in the Scottish Highlands, where he is working on a production of Lear at Pitlochry, accompanied by someone named Ramsay.

The actor acknowledged he would need time to process and grieve the end of his marriage, asking people not to take offence if he does not respond to messages or calls immediately.

His posts attracted an outpouring of support from fellow performers, with actress Amanda Abbington responding with heart emojis and EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite also showing her support.

Mr Masson expressed gratitude for the tremendous backing he has received from close friends during this difficult period.

Mr Masson built his television profile through his portrayal of teacher Rod Morris in EastEnders, a character who became central to one of the BBC soap's most contentious plots involving the sexual assault of student Nicky di Marco.

Beyond Albert Square, he co-created the cult Scottish comedy The High Life with Alan Cumming, and more recently appeared as photographer Duncan Muir in the sixth series of Netflix's The Crown.

Ms Masson competed in the over-28s category on The X Factor's 2012 series, where her powerful performances earned her a place in the live shows before she became the second finalist eliminated.

She has since established herself as a sought-after session vocalist, collaborating with Stereophonics, Kasabian, and Fatboy Slim, whilst also accumulating numerous West End credits.
