Many drivers will be heading to Europe this upcoming bank holiday weekend

Experts have issued a warning to Britons planning to drive in Europe this year, as they could face issues when travelling across the border.

Millions of Britons are set to go abroad over the coming months as they look to make use of bank holidays and chase warmer temperatures in the summer.

However, experts are warning that Britons could find themselves in hot water if they do not prepare for the trip properly.

It may seem obvious, but motorists must ensure they have a valid driving licence before they set off.

Cherie Carter, Director at Indigo Car Hire, said: "It's surprisingly common to see drivers with out-of-date licences. If you think about how rarely you use your licence.

"Just like passports, they will expire after 10 years. To avoid any mishaps before you even pick the car up, make sure that everything is in order with the DVLA."

Failure to present a valid licence can result in rental companies refusing to provide the vehicle if they are trying to hire a car.

Credit cards are also typically required by rental companies as a security deposit, but alternatives may be available.

Carter added: "Depending on the location and type of debit card, it is sometimes possible to go down this route.

"Do your research and look for pages where you can hire with a debit card."

For travellers who dread navigating unfamiliar roads after a long flight, door delivery services offer a convenient alternative.

"If you've endured a long flight, or don't feel comfortable leaving a busy city centre airport, you can also look for options where the hire car is delivered to your door," Carter advised.

The expert added that drivers should follow a "good tip" to opt for a vehicle or rental company with a fuel policy.

It comes after parts of Spain and Portugal were hit by power outages earlier this week, which saw millions of people plunged into darkness.

Carter noted that these policies are typically "the most cost-effective and transparent" option for holidaymakers. The key requirement is ensuring the tank is completely full when returning the vehicle.

European countries have specific safety equipment requirements that drivers must be aware of, which are not commonplace in the UK.

She said: "In most of Europe, it's also mandatory to carry a warning triangle in your vehicle. This is to alert other drivers that there is a potential hazard approaching, for example, if you happen to break down or need to change a tyre.

"In the likes of France, Italy and Spain, it's also mandatory to carry a high-vis jacket in your car."

Failing to carry these items could result in fines if stopped by authorities, which could put a dampener on the trip.
