Protecting your bones is key to long-term oral health - and certain foods can help, says an oral surgeon

A condition that often goes undetected until a fracture occurs is affecting millions across Britain, with dietary choices playing a crucial role in prevention.

Osteoporosis, which progressively weakens the skeletal system, currently impacts more than three million individuals in the UK. And the number of cases is anticipated to climb as the population grows older.

Dr Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, emphasises that the relationship between skeletal and dental wellbeing frequently goes unrecognised.

"Your teeth and jawbone rely on the same minerals as the rest of your skeleton," he said. "If your bone health declines, it can affect everything from tooth stability to long-term oral health."

Beyond the commonly recommended calcium supplements, certain foods offer unexpected benefits for maintaining strong bones and teeth.

Sardines, frequently passed over at the supermarket, rank among the most calcium-rich natural foods available, especially when consumed with their soft, edible bones.

The small fish additionally provide vitamin D, which enhances the body's ability to utilise calcium effectively.

"They provide calcium, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, all of which support bone density," Dr Bozic said. "These nutrients also help reduce inflammation, which can impact both bone and gum health."

This combination makes the humble sardine a particularly valuable addition to one's weekly menu. Prunes are another unexpected ally in the fight against bone deterioration.

Research indicates these dried fruits may assist in preserving bone density, with studies suggesting particular benefits for women following menopause.

Regular consumption has been associated with reduced rates of bone loss.

"Prunes contain compounds that appear to support bone metabolism," Dr Bozic said. "They're a simple addition that many people wouldn't immediately think of."

The fruit's bone-supporting properties make it an accessible option for those seeking to bolster their skeletal health through straightforward dietary adjustments, requiring no specialist knowledge or preparation.

Tofu offers a valuable alternative for those who avoid dairy products, delivering both calcium and protein essential for skeletal integrity.

"It's an excellent option for those who don't consume dairy," Dr Bozic said. "It delivers calcium alongside protein, both of which are important for strong bones and teeth."

The soy-based food is frequently fortified with additional nutrients, enhancing its bone-supporting credentials further.

While dietary modifications alone cannot entirely eliminate osteoporosis risk, experts maintain they contribute meaningfully when combined with regular physical activity and healthy lifestyle practices.

"Supporting your bones also supports your teeth, and that's something many people don't realise," Dr Bozic added.
