The TV star's surge in the odds has transformed the Bond race

The race to become the next James Bond has taken a major twist, with one previously overlooked contender suddenly rocketing up the odds and reshaping the field.

Callum Turner now stands as the frontrunner at 7/4, but he is no longer alone at the top.

A certain Bridgerton favourite has stormed into second place, a dramatic leap that marks one of the clearest shifts in the betting market this year.

Industry analysts say the surge reflects growing confidence that the franchise is preparing for a younger, more modern direction.

And now, after weeks of speculation, that rising star has been identified as Jonathan Bailey, who has jumped to 3/1 and overtaken long-time contender Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Turner’s 7/4 odds give him a 36.36% implied probability, the strongest position any actor has held all year.

Mr Bailey’s rise to 25% puts him firmly in second place, making him the only serious challenger to Turner’s momentum.

The actor's ascent follows the huge success of his performance as Lord Anthony in Netflix’s Bridgerton, which propelled him to global fame during the pandemic.

Since then, he has secured roles in the Wicked film franchise and Jurassic World Rebirth, solidifying his leading-man status.

The 37-year-old Oxfordshire actor, who began his career in West End productions including Les Misérables, went on to appear in Broadchurch and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Crashing.

His profile surged further this year when he became the first openly gay recipient of People’s Sexiest Man Alive title.

Casting insiders say Mr Bailey’s combination of dramatic range, international appeal, and commercial success has transformed him from a long-shot outsider to a top-tier contender in astonishingly quick time.

Meanwhile, Mr Taylor-Johnson’s odds have drifted to 7/2 (22.22%), signalling waning confidence in a man once viewed as the inevitable successor to Daniel Craig.

Though still a contender, he has been eclipsed by two fresher, younger names commanding far stronger momentum.

The middle of the market has also shifted. Theo James has climbed to 9/2, while James Nelson-Joyce now sits at 5/1, both ahead of former heavyweight favourite Henry Cavill.

Mr Nelson-Joyce’s growing backing follows praise for his gritty performance in This City Is Ours, while James continues to benefit from roles combining action and prestige.

Mr Cavill’s drop to 6/1 reflects a broader change in expectations. His implied probability has more than halved from earlier in the year, with speculation mounting that producers prefer a younger actor capable of anchoring the franchise for the next decade.

Dominic Celica, Head of PR for Free Bets & Betting Sign Up Offers, described the latest shifts as “the clearest turning point we’ve seen in the Bond race all year.”

“Callum Turner has gone from interesting outsider to the man everyone has to beat, and the latest price move to 7/4 proves it. His momentum isn’t just strong, but snowballing,” he said.

On Mr Bailey’s rise, Celica added: “His surge to 3/1 is one of the most dramatic jumps we’ve recorded in months, and it tells us the industry noise around him is absolutely real.”

He said the market was now clearly pointing towards a younger, more flexible Bond: “The market is telling us Bond is heading in a different direction: younger, more nuanced, more adaptable.”
