'I can take any nonsense thrown at me, but leave my children alone'

Kate Garraway has revealed the harrowing impact of AI-generated photographs depicting her alongside a “fake boyfriend”.

The television host, 58, whose husband Derek Draper died in January 2024 following complications from Covid, initially dismissed the doctored images with humour.

Ms Garrawy explained for over a year, people have been mistakenly offering congratulations on her supposed new relationship.

She had even taken calls from friends and been approached by strangers in public, all believing the artificially created content to be genuine.

"At first, the imagined match-ups involved friends like Richard Arnold or Ben Shephard, and we laughed it off," she wrote in The Sun.

However, the broadcaster soon recognised how deeply the false rumours were affecting her two children Darcey and William, whom she shared with her late husband.

The broadcaster issued a stark warning about the erosion of trust in an age of artificial intelligence.

"When everything can be faked, proof starts to lose its meaning," Ms Garraway cautioned, noting once confidence is undermined, rebuilding it proves exceptionally difficult.

The TV star urged people to pause and scrutinise content they encounter online, suggesting that teaching children healthy scepticism represents an essential skill rather than cynicism.

On Instagram, Ms Garraway reflected: "In this case, it only affects me really and is fundamentally silly and daft, but imagine if it was something more important, the damage it could do?"

The situation took a darker turn when she discovered a headline claiming to reveal "everything you need to know about Kate Garraway's new boyfriend", apparently prompted by the AI spoofs.

"As I read on, something stopped me cold. A detail in the article claimed my son was not happy and was insisting the relationship end," the 58-year-old explained.

Ms Garraway was incensed that her 16-year-old, who has been navigating grief alongside exam pressures, was being depicted as standing in the way of his mother's happiness.

"It said something like 'The relationship looks set to flounder because Kate's son isn't happy and is insisting she ends it'," she recounted, adding that her son was "the opposite of that".

The broadcaster expressed deep concern about the potential fallout for her son, worrying about who might encounter the false reports.

"You can't help worrying. What if his mates see it? Their parents? His teachers?" she said.

The presenter described her reaction as a fundamental maternal response to seeing her child targeted.

"It's the classic mum instinct: I can take any nonsense thrown at me, but leave my children alone," she wrote.

Ms Garraway’s account of her own harrowing experience comes amid the major row over sexually charged images generated by Grok, the chatbot tool of Elon Musk’s X.

Ofcom has confirmed "investigations remain ongoing," despite the social media platform introducing several new regulations to crack down on the generation of sexualised images.
