Comedian John Cleese has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of "treason" after amplifying social media claims about the Gaza peace agreement.

The Fawlty Towers star shared a post from an account called Anonymous, which alleged that the current ceasefire terms were identical to proposals Mr Netanyahu had previously rejected multiple times.

According to the reposted content, Israel turned down earlier iterations of the same agreement because it wanted to hand Donald Trump a diplomatic triumph.

The Anonymous account claimed this rejection came "at the expense of the Israeli hostages and the Gaza population."

Mr Cleese commented on the allegations, writing on X: "This is extraordinarily important. And if true, evidence of treason."

The actor's remarks come as the fragile Gaza ceasefire continues to hold following Monday's hostage-prisoner exchange.

The social media post that Mr Cleese, 85, shared suggested Mr Netanyahu had been presented with the peace proposal on multiple occasions but consistently declined to accept it.

The Anonymous account's message specifically stated that the deal was "repeatedly" offered to both Mr Netanyahu and the United States government.

According to the post, Israel's rejection of these earlier proposals was motivated by a desire to present Mr Trump, described as an "Israeli asset", with what would appear to be a diplomatic achievement.

The account alleged that this political calculation meant prolonging the conflict despite having access to the same terms that eventually led to Monday's prisoner exchange.

The post claimed this strategy directly impacted both Israeli hostages held in Gaza and the Palestinian civilian population, who continued to suffer whilst negotiations stalled.

Mr Cleese made further criticisms of Mr Netanyahu after sharing another social media post highlighting Israel's apparent breach of ceasefire terms.

The shared post stated: "Netanyahu announces Israel will not abide by the terms of facilitating humanitarian aid, despite it being a key ceasefire agreement clause. Didn't take long, did it?"

The Monty Python star responded: "Longer than I expected, though. Prison awaits when the war ends...."

The humanitarian aid provision represents a crucial component of the peace agreement, with reconstruction costs for Gaza estimated at over £50 billion according to UN development agencies.

The ceasefire remains precarious, with reports of Hamas executing 33 people it branded as "collaborators" whilst attempting to reassert authority in Gaza.

Video footage circulating online appears to show Hamas gunmen carrying out street executions as the group tries to consolidate power.

The peace agreement requires Hamas to fully disarm, though this has not yet occurred, potentially providing Mr Netanyahu with justification to resume military operations.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggested Britain could assist with monitoring the ceasefire and decommissioning Hamas weaponry, drawing on experience from Northern Ireland.

Mr Cleese also endorsed the Liberal Democrats' call for a security assessment of Elon Musk, after the party accused the billionaire of "stoking far-right extremism on our streets," responding: "Hear, hear!"
