The couple announced they'd gone their separate ways earlier this year

Jesy Nelson has disclosed that she made the decision to end her engagement to Zion Foster after their daughters' health crisis drove a wedge between them.

The 34-year-old former Little Mix star and the rapper were together for four years before their separation, which came shortly after they revealed their twin girls had been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1.

In a forthcoming episode of her Prime Video documentary series, the singer addresses the breakdown of their relationship, explaining that the couple handled the traumatic situation in fundamentally different ways.

"Together we were just clashing. So I decided we would be better off apart," she stated in the programme, which captures the aftermath of learning their babies have the rare muscle-wasting condition.

Ocean and Story, now a year old, were diagnosed with the condition in January, with the documentary capturing the devastating moment the parents received the news from medical professionals.

"I know I sound really negative now but it is hard to accept that this is going to be their life now. It just feels like it is getting worse and worse," Ms Nelson shared in the footage.

"I really thought my heartache was over. I can't believe this is happening. I feel so heartbroken."

Mr Foster also opened up about his own difficulties in the film, which saw him confess: "I am not equipped to deal with this, I am out of my depth, emotionally physically and mentally. At the moment I am just surviving."

Despite the end of their relationship, Ms Nelson emphasised that she and Mr Foster remain on good terms.

"It is a very traumatic thing we have both been through," she reflected in the documentary, The Mirror reports.

"I think it's quite inevitable for things like this to happen as a couple.

"Like, I don't think it's like a shock that we've broken up, because you'll either be a team or it can tear you apart, and unfortunately, I feel like that's what it's done to Zi and I."

The singer stressed that her children are her sole focus now, explaining that she wanted to maintain positive energy in the household for their sake.

"There's no bad feeling. My main priority is them, so like, I just want to be the best mum for them," she said.

Jesy now cares for the twins alongside her mother, acknowledging the difficulty of their new circumstances.

The singer has channelled her experience into campaigning for expanded newborn screening, achieving significant progress in recent weeks.

The UK Government has confirmed that a petition calling for SMA to be added to newborn screening in England will be debated in Parliament on June 22.

Additionally, Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced that approximately 400,000 babies will be tested for the condition through heel prick screening from October 2026, bringing the programme forward from its originally planned January 2027 start date.

The NHS currently tests newborns at around five days old for ten treatable conditions, including cystic fibrosis.

Ms Nelson appeared on This Morning in January, where she pledged to "shout from the rooftops" until changes were implemented.
