The veteran broadcaster revealed why she married again, after decades of turbulent relationships

Janet Street-Porter has revealed why she chose to marry for a fifth time at 79, saying she has finally found lasting happiness after a lifetime of turbulent relationships.

The outspoken television personality quietly tied the knot with her long-term partner, Peter, in a small register office ceremony in Great Yarmouth.

The intimate wedding, attended by just two neighbours, followed more than 25 years together after the couple first met in 1998.

Explaining the decision, Ms Street-Porter insisted the marriage was far from impulsive.

“We had talked about it a lot,” she told the Daily Mail, saying the ceremony simply “felt natural” after decades together.

She admitted she had once worried about marrying again. “I’d always thought it would be too embarrassing to walk down the aisle yet again,” she said, but added she wanted the day to be special for her partner, who had never been married before.

Unlike her earlier relationships, Ms Street-Porter described this marriage as grounded in trust and long-term companionship.

“This one is special,” she said. “This one will last.”

The broadcaster has long been open about her complicated romantic past, which includes four previous marriages and several high-profile affairs.

She revealed one marriage felt like a mistake almost immediately, recalling how she realised the decision was wrong “the morning after” the ceremony.

Another relationship, she said, was strained by a significant age gap and personal tragedy, while a brief Las Vegas marriage during a midlife crisis ended in a painful split that left her shaken.

Reflecting on her past, Ms Street-Porter acknowledged she often prioritised career ambition over stability at home.

Ms Street-Porter quickly made her mark in journalism and broadcasting, building a high-profile career, although she has said her personal life often came second.

Her relationship with Peter unfolded very differently. A former teacher and counsellor, he prefers a quiet life in rural Norfolk, far from the spotlight that has defined her career.

The Loose Women panellist credits the strength of their relationship to personal growth over time. “Love isn’t about being needy,” she said.

“True love must be anchored in trust and feeling comfortable with each other.”

The couple’s wedding reflected their understated lifestyle, followed by a modest celebration with close friends.

Ms Street-Porter said the low-key event represented how much her outlook has changed in later life, adding she has learned the importance of "compromise, patience and forgiveness."

She also reflected on how her upbringing shaped her views on relationships, describing family pressures and secrecy around marriage during her childhood as influential in her early romantic decisions.

Now approaching her eighties, the broadcaster said she feels she has finally found stability after decades of emotional upheaval.

She said: “By learning toleration and not behaving in a totally self-centred way, I have finally found peace."
