Grantchester’s Will Davenport had a rough couple of weeks as his mental health continued to decline before Thursday's finale

The final episode of Grantchester season eight left ITV viewers "bawling" after Will Davenport (played by Tom Brittney) announced he was finished with his pills and made peace with God.

After it first aired back in 2014, Granchester became a staple in many viewers’ homes after falling in love with Geordie Keating (played by Robson Green) and the show's leading man has provided an update on its future following Will's journey in the finale.

As series eight came to an end last night, many were curious as to whether they will get another installment after bursting into tears due to Will’s decline.

Keating’s Robson Green offered up the good news and revealed the cast and crew are hoping to continue in the future.

He explained: “At the beginning we knew we had something special and that would float the audience's boat.

“But we never realised how popular it would turn out to be and how well it would be received around the world. We’re all still enjoying it, long may it continue."

Over the last couple of episodes, Will’s mental health continued to decline following a collision where he accidentally killed someone.

Last night, he wrote a letter to his friends and family where he explained: “I know I haven't been the man you need me to be. I've let you all down. I've tried to be better, but it's just too hard.

“And the guilt I carry won't go away, so I've done the only thing I can, the only thing that makes sense. Everything will be better now I'm gone."

Will was on a mission to punish himself, he was struck down after picking a fight with a random in the pub - the police soon found him and helped to clean him up.

The next morning he quickly turned back to his bottle of pills but was soon given a new outlook after bumping into a young boy who blamed himself for his aunt's murder.

After giving him some words of encouragement and taking his own advice, Will drove back to Grantchester and announced he was done with the pills and wanted to move on from the guilt.

He also made it back in time to witness the birth of his son James George Davenport and later made his peace with God.

Fans were left sobbing at the end of the emotional episode and took to their social media to praise the hard-hitting scenes.
