Isiah Whitlock Jr's manager confirmed the sad news

Isiah Whitlock Jr, the veteran American actor celebrated for his portrayal of the delightfully corrupt state Senator Clay Davis in HBO's acclaimed drama The Wire, has died at the age of 71.

The performer passed away peacefully in New York on Tuesday following a brief illness, his manager Brian Liebman confirmed.

Mr Whitlock Jr became synonymous with his character's distinctive drawn-out expletive "sheeeee-it", a catchphrase that became so beloved it inspired the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum to release a talking figurine in his likeness in 2022.

The Indiana-born actor appeared in 25 episodes across all five seasons of the groundbreaking crime series, which ran from 2002 to 2008, cementing his status as a fan favourite.

Beyond The Wire, Mr Whitlock Jr carved out a substantial career across television and cinema. He portrayed US Secretary of Defense George Maddox in the political satire Veep for three seasons, with his character challenging Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Selina Meyer during the show's fictional 2016 presidential primaries.

The actor maintained a prolific partnership with filmmaker Spike Lee, featuring in five of his productions: 25th Hour, She Hate Me, Red Hook Summer, Chi-Raq, BlacKkKlansman and Da 5 Bloods.

His signature catchphrase originated during work on Mr Lee's 2002 film 25th Hour, where he played a detective who discovers drugs concealed in furniture. Writers on The Wire subsequently incorporated the expression into his Senator Davis character.

More recently, Mr Whitlock Jr appeared in Showtime's Your Honor and Netflix's The Residence.

Mr Lee paid heartfelt tribute to his longtime collaborator, describing the loss as devastating. "It's a big, big, big loss," the director told the Associated Press on Tuesday evening. "I'm going to miss him for the rest of my life."

Mr Lee recalled their instant connection, saying: "We vibed over all those years. We clicked from the jump."

The filmmaker spoke warmly of time spent together during the Thailand shoot for Da 5 Bloods, and remembered their final meeting at a screening of Kiss of the Spider Woman earlier this year, where Mr Lee attended with his daughter Satchel.

"He was just a beautiful, beautiful soul," Mr Lee reflected. "If you were around him, he made everybody feel good in his presence. He would radiate. I would put that over his acting."

The Wire creator David Simon also honoured his former cast member on social media platform Bluesky. "As fine an actor as he was," Mr Simon wrote, "Isiah was an even better spirit and the greatest gentleman."

Mr Whitlock Jr's manager expressed profound grief at the news. "It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr.," Mr Liebman stated.

"If you knew him – you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing."

His management company, Liebman Entertainment, added that Mr Whitlock Jr would be "deeply missed for his zest for life and the unforgettable presence he brought to the screen".
