The actor, 69, and screenwriter, 35, confirmed they had split months ago

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have confirmed their nine-year relationship has come to an end.

The 69-year-old actor-director and the 35-year-old screenwriter actually parted ways approximately twelve months ago, though the separation has only now been made public.

In a joint statement provided exclusively to People, the former couple said: "Although it's sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible."

Their eight-year-old son Lars remains the priority for both Mr Gibson and Ms Ross as they navigate their new circumstances.

The pair have committed to working together as co-parents despite the breakdown of their romantic partnership.

The announcement brings to a close a relationship that began when the couple were introduced by mutual acquaintances back in 2014, with romance blossoming shortly afterwards.

Ms Ross was just 23 when she first encountered Gibson, who was 58 at the time. She had been brought on board by his production company to collaborate on a screenplay.

The pair were reportedly introduced through shared friends, and Mr Gibson is said to have taken her on a lavish trip to Costa Rica not long after their initial meeting.

Beyond her work in film, Ms Ross boasts an impressive athletic pedigree. She claimed gold at the 2010 World Equestrian Games as a competitive horse rider.

Her academic background includes studying literature at Emerson College, and she has since built a notable career behind the camera.

Her credits include work on the television series Matador, while she both wrote and directed the 2022 feature Father Stu, which starred Mark Wahlberg alongside Gibson.

Their son Lars arrived in January 2017, his birth coinciding with a significant moment in Mr Gibson's career.

The baby was born just days before the filmmaker learned he had secured a Best Director nomination at the Academy Awards for his war drama Hacksaw Ridge.

Reflecting on that timing, Mr Gibson remarked: "What could be more exciting than listening to the nominations being announced while holding my newborn son."

Lars is Mr Gibson's youngest child. In September 2024, both he and his half-sister Lucia, now 16, accompanied their father to the Los Angeles premiere of his film Monster Summer.

Earlier this year, the family faced upheaval when the couple's Malibu residence was destroyed in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025.

Mr Gibson has been married once before, to Robyn Moore, with whom he shares seven children: daughter Hannah and sons Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo and Thomas. That marriage lasted from 1980 until 2011.

Between his marriage ending and meeting Ms Ross, Mr Gibson was involved with Russian singer and pianist Oksana Grigorieva from 2007 to 2010. The pair have a daughter, Lucia, who was born in 2009.

That relationship ended acrimoniously, with Mr Gibson pleading no contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge in 2011. He received three years' probation, counselling and community service.

Professionally, Mr Gibson continues to work on The Resurrection of the Christ, his long-awaited sequel to the 2004 biblical epic The Passion of the Christ. The film will be released in two parts, with the first scheduled for Good Friday 2027.
