The project will explore her rise to fame, sudden retreat and deeply personal trauma

Duffy is set to tell her story in a new feature-length documentary commissioned by Disney+.

The Welsh singer, whose 2008 debut album Rockferry earned her Grammy, BRIT and Ivor Novello awards, rose rapidly to fame with her hit single Mercy.

At the height of her success, however, she disappeared entirely from public life.

For a decade, Duffy remained absent from the music industry, social media and public appearances without explanation.

Disney+ confirmed on Wednesday that the Hulu Original film will chart her journey from her Welsh upbringing through her rise to stardom and subsequent retreat from the spotlight.

In 2020, the Mercy singer broke her silence with a harrowing revelation about the reason behind her disappearance.

She disclosed she had been drugged, abducted and taken to a foreign country, where she was sexually assaulted.

"It was my birthday, I was drugged at a restaurant, I was drugged then for four weeks and travelled to a foreign country," she wrote at the time.

She also described waking in a vehicle with no memory of boarding a plane, before being taken to a hotel room where her attacker raped her.

The trauma, she said, forced her into isolation and cut her off from the world she once knew.

Duffy has largely remained out of the public eye since sharing her story.

The forthcoming documentary will offer unprecedented access as she recounts her experiences on film for the first time.

It will also feature archival footage and contributions from friends, family and figures from the music industry.

Northern Irish filmmaker Ms Gill Callan will direct the project, which is backed by a development fund from Disney+ UK in partnership with Northern Ireland Screen.

The documentary is being produced by Rare TV, with Fernando De Jesus serving as executive producer, alongside Matthew Worthy for Stellify Media.

The commission was overseen by Angela Jain, Disney+’s Head of Content, and Sean Doyle, Vice President of Unscripted for the EMEA region.

Mr Doyle praised Ms Duffy’s decision to speak out.

He said: "This film will give Duffy the chance to tell her story in her own words. Above all, I'm especially in awe of Duffy – for her honesty and courage to share her story."

Mr Doyle added the project marks the first commission from Disney+’s initiative to spotlight impactful, female-led stories in collaboration with Northern Ireland Screen.

He said she was drawn to the complexity of Ms Duffy’s journey.

"Duffy's life has been shaped by success and fame, but equally by pain, defiance, and an irrepressible sense of self," she said.

"I'm drawn to the tension between vulnerability and confidence in her story and how a person can be deeply affected by their experiences, yet still find a powerful, expressive voice that is unmistakably hers."
