The US President issued a statement on social media

US President Donald Trump has come under fire after commenting on director Rob Reiner and his wife's "apparent homicide".

The film director was found dead alongside his wife, Michele Singer, on Sunday afternoon.

Tributes have flooded in from far and wide for the award-winning director, but issuing a statement of his own, President Trump took aim at his political differences with Mr Reiner.

Claiming Mr Reiner suffered from "Trump Derangement Syndrome", President Trump wrote on Truth Social: "A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood.

"Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.

"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before."

He ended the statement: "May Rob and Michele rest in peace!" (sic)

Mr Reiner had been a vocal critic of Mr Trump since he first took office in 2016.

The 78-year-old filmmaker, celebrated for classics such as When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride, and his 68-year-old spouse appeared to have sustained knife wounds, according to law enforcement sources.

LAPD detectives confirmed the couple's identities on Sunday evening, with a substantial police presence gathering at the property.

A family member is understood to have been arrested in connection with the murders.

Writing on X, many quickly responded with outrage to the President's remarks.

"Stop electing sociopaths! A beloved actor/director/producer is brutally murdered with his wife and his thoughts are about himself and insulting the victims," one fumed.

A second wrote: "Once again Trump proves he is unfit to be President of the United States of America. And Rob Reiner and his wife knew it, and publicly said so."

"Trump's post about Rob Reiner is as trashy and classless as something someone would write about Trump if he died. Namely, Rob Reiner," a third noted.

Someone else argued: "I don't want to hear another sanctimonious word from the Republicans who accused Democrats of not showing enough sadness when Charlie Kirk died. Donald Trump's message about Rob Reiner's death is a monstrosity."

"I'm utterly disgusted to hear what a sitting president of free world has put out on a horrific death of Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle. Absolutely vile," another agreed. (sic)

Following the immediate news of Mr Reiner's death alongside his wife, Ms Singer, a family spokesperson released a statement.

It read: "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner.

"We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."
