The former BBC Breakfast star moved over to Channel 5 back in June 2022

Dan Walker was forced to defend his choice of footwear during a recent Channel 5 appearance after many viewers branded his shoes a “disgrace”.

Walker hosted the first news broadcast of the week and wore a smart navy suit over a crisp white shirt, alongside a pair of navy leather trainers from luxury brand Oliver Sweeney.

Whilst the 47-year-old was pleased with his choice and felt comfortable in the shoe, viewers were irked by his decision and shared their disdain with him.

Walker was left less than pleased with the number of people who seemed to have an opinion on his fashion sense and decided to hit back on his Instagram account.

Sharing a close-up image of the shoes, he penned: “So… a few viewers got in contact about my shoes on @c5news tonight.

“Personally, I think there are far more important things going on in the world and I don’t believe wearing these counts as a ‘disgrace’ or the dropping of ‘standards’.

“They aren’t trainers and I think they are smart and I love them. What do you think? P.S. nice to be back. P.P.S for those asking they are @oliversweeney.”

Just like the many who wrote in to comment, fans of Walker's also flocked under his post to comment on the shoes.

One replied: “Not appropriate for reading the news, regardless of it being Channel 5. But [definitely] wouldn’t go as far as calling them a disgrace."

Another added: “Sorry Dan. Love you but it's a no from me re. your shoes. Well, you have asked!"

“Defo not a disgrace but I prefer a more classic shoe with a suit personally, I think some traditions are worth preserving. Your suit is [heart eye emoji],” a third expressed.

However, not all fans were annoyed by the father-of-three’s choice of footwear, as one defended: “Does it affect the way he reads the news? Does it come across differently? Don’t think so. Didn't realise there is a dress code.”

“Crikey…it’s Channel 5 News, not the State Opening of Parliament! Perspective people…” another agreed before one noted: “There's nothing wrong with them at all. People have nothing better to do than judge.” (sic)

Walker’s clap back at his viewers comes after he announced a new career move away from TV screens as he is now part owner of a café with his wife Sarah Walker.

Announcing the news on his Instagram, he wrote: “You know I go on about cake a lot? Well… I am officially now the part-owner of a cafe!!!

“It’s something my wife and I have been thinking about for a while and an opportunity came up just down the road from our house in Sheffield at a place we love, right at the heart of the community, and with friends who are brilliant.

“So… feel free to pop along to the Brook Coffee Rooms in Fulwood in Sheffield… I’ll be the one in the corner eating a cronut." Dan finished off the message with love heart emojis and wrote: "It is officially… THE DREAM." (sic)
