The Prince of Wales made an impromptu stop at Bara Café

Prince William stopped by The Prince of Peckham Pub during his community-focused tour of the south London neighbourhood.

The venue, founded by Clement Ogbonnaya in 2017, was designed as an inclusive gathering space for local residents.

Mr Ogbonnaya received recognition in this year's New Year's Honours List for his significant contributions to the area.

At the pub, the Prince of Wales learned about various community programmes aimed at tackling isolation, including the "Chatty Patty" initiative.

This weekly scheme offers complimentary tea and conversation to those seeking companionship.

William met with participants and local residents who take part in the programme, which underscores how community venues can support mental wellbeing and combat loneliness.

The prince's Peckham engagements commenced earlier that day with a visit to Pecan, a well-established charity working to address poverty in the borough.

The organisation operates the Southwark Foodbank, which distributes food parcels to roughly 100 households each week.

Throughout 2025, the foodbank provided assistance to approximately 7,000 adults and more than 2,500 children across the area.

During his time at Pecan, William toured the charity's main premises and met with staff members, volunteers, and individuals who have benefited from its services.

He also visited the nearby warehouse that supplies provisions to the foodbank operation.

Pecan faced a considerable setback in 2024 when burglars targeted its warehouse, stealing food and hygiene products valued at around £3,000.

The charity was subsequently buoyed by an outpouring of community generosity, enabling it to recover swiftly from the theft.

Beyond its foodbank operations, Pecan delivers a range of services to tackle poverty in Southwark.

These include a drop-in café providing refreshments and support, an Employment Opportunity programme helping residents find work, and Peckham Pantry, which functions as a social supermarket.

The charity also runs a women's advisory service supporting those affected by the criminal justice system or navigating complex personal circumstances.

Following his Peckham engagements, William made an unplanned detour while en route to Shoreditch.

The father-of-three asked his convoy to pull over at Bara Café after members of his team brought the establishment to his attention.

The community-oriented café takes its name from the Welsh word for bread and specialises in traditional Welsh cuisine.

Its menu features classic dishes such as Welsh Rarebit and bara brith, a traditional fruit loaf.

William requested the impromptu stop to greet the café's staff and also make a nod to his royal title, the Prince of Wales.
