The veteran actress has had to undergo surgery

French film legend Brigitte Bardot has spent the past three weeks receiving treatment at a medical facility in Toulon after being hospitalised with what French media describe as a "serious" health condition.

The 91-year-old actress required surgical intervention during her stay, according to multiple reports from France.

Medical professionals are continuing to oversee her recovery whilst she remains under their care at the southern French hospital.

The exact nature of her illness has not been made public, though local media outlets indicate she was transferred to the facility from her residence in Saint-Tropez.

Her hospitalisation is the latest in a string of significant health woes for the legendary performer who became one of France's most celebrated post-war cinema stars.

Ms Bardot was taken from her Saint-Tropez home to the medical centre in nearby Toulon, where she underwent an operation, French media outlets report.

Whilst her precise medical condition remains undisclosed, sources suggest the situation is not deemed critical.

Reports from France indicate that the star could be discharged in the coming days, though she would continue to require careful monitoring at home.

The hospitalisation represents the latest health challenge for Bardot, who experienced severe respiratory problems in July 2023 that necessitated emergency medical attention at her residence.

Ms Bardot's cinematic journey began in 1952 with The Girl In The Bikini, establishing her as a prominent figure in French cinema.

Her international breakthrough came four years later, starring opposite her then-husband Roger Vadim in And God Created Woman, which became the most successful foreign release in American cinema history despite censorship challenges.

The Parisian performer, who earned the moniker "sex kitten", appeared in numerous productions, including The Truth, Le Mépris, and Viva Maria! throughout her career.

After featuring in 47 films and recording 60 songs, she withdrew from the entertainment industry in 1973.

The actress has since dedicated herself to animal welfare activism, becoming as renowned for her advocacy work as her screen performances.

During her previous health scare in July 2023, Bardot experienced significant breathing difficulties at her Saint-Tropez home, prompting an emergency response.

Her husband Bernard d'Ormale revealed that paramedics initially struggled to locate their residence due to incorrect address information, describing the incident as "a moment of respiratory distraction".

The emergency team administered oxygen and remained to monitor her condition, with d'Ormale attributing the episode to heat intolerance common in elderly individuals.

The actress is anticipated to return to her Saint-Tropez home shortly, where she will continue recuperating under medical supervision.
