The singer was hospitalised in Portugal last month

Bonnie Tyler has woken from her induced coma but remains seriously unwell as she continues treatment in intensive care at a Portuguese hospital.

The 75-year-old Welsh singer's representatives confirmed the development on Monday, stating that while she is no longer in a medically induced sleep, her condition remains serious.

The singer's official website was updated on Monday with a new statement that read: "Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal.

"Although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time."

The Total Eclipse of the Heart star had been placed in the coma following emergency surgery and subsequent complications last month.

Ms Tyler's health crisis began when she started experiencing discomfort while in London, though initial medical examinations found nothing concerning.

The Skewen-born performer subsequently travelled to her home in the Algarve, where she developed severe abdominal pain within days.

Her long-term friend Liberto Mealha explained: "Two days later, she went to a private hospital, which urgently transferred her to the hospital in Faro because her appendix had burst and she needed emergency surgery."

The initial operation in early May was reported to have been successful, but her condition subsequently worsened as doctors battled a serious infection.

She was then placed into an induced coma to aid her recovery, before later suffering cardiac arrest when medical staff attempted to bring her round, requiring resuscitation.

In light of her ongoing recovery, Ms Tyler's family has confirmed that all remaining summer performances have been cancelled or rescheduled, affecting every concert through the end of August.

The decision impacts more than two dozen shows the singer had planned across Europe this year.

Her team expressed hope that autumn dates would still proceed as planned.

"We apologise to all of Bonnie's fans and to our promoter partners for the disappointment that this will cause," the family statement read, "but trust that you will understand and bear with us in these difficult circumstances."

Management thanked supporters for what they described as a tremendous outpouring of sympathy from around the globe.

The family noted that Ms Tyler is aware of the messages of goodwill and deeply appreciates them.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath in 1951, Ms Tyler grew up in a council house in a coal mining community before being spotted by a talent scout at a Swansea venue during the mid-1970s.

Her breakthrough came with Lost in France in 1976, but global stardom arrived with Total Eclipse of the Heart seven years later which reached number one in both Britain and America.

The track has since become one of the best-selling singles ever recorded, surpassing one billion Spotify streams last year.

Her famously raspy vocals were an accidental creation, resulting from throat surgery in the 1970s when she ignored medical advice to rest her voice.

Other major hits include It's a Heartache and Holding Out for a Hero from the Footloose soundtrack.

Ms Tyler was awarded an MBE in 2022 for services to music and divides her time between Mumbles and Portugal.
