Nora Scott’s obituary said she died peacefully surrounded by family and friends

Andrew Scott’s mother Nora has died following a “sudden illness”, her family has said, just three days before Mother’s Day.

The heartbreaking family announcement yesterday said she had died peacefully on Thursday, March 7, in Dublin’s St Vincent’s Hospital.

Her obituary reads: “It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Nora Scott (née Boyle), beloved wife of Jim, mother of Sarah, Andrew and Hannah.

“Scott (née Boyle), Sandymount, Dublin, formerly Omagh Co. Tyrone, [died] March 7 2024 peacefully surrounded by her loving family and best friend Anne, in St Vincent's Hospital following a sudden illness.

“Nora will be deeply missed by her beloved husband Jim, her loving children Sarah, Andrew and Hannah.

“May Nora’s gentle soul Rest in Peace.”

Stage and screen veteran Anthony Hopkins, now 86, had sent Scott “more than three dozen red roses” after her son had told him his mother was unwell in 2018.

Andrew Scott was starring in a BBC adaptation of King Lear as Edgar alongside Hopkins, who played the titular role.

Speaking to RTE, she said at the time: “There was probably more than three dozen red roses, and attached to them was a little card from Anthony saying ‘Be well, sending hugs’, and all sorts of things.

“I was thrilled to get such a gift and for the kind thought that promoted it.

“Now I’ve recovered, I can enjoy these exquisite roses that grace our hall. It was such a beautiful gift.

“My son Andrew said Anthony had a positive attitude to life and was absolutely lovely to work with.”

The tragedy came just days before both Mother’s Day and the 2024 Oscars, which saw Andrew Scott’s All Of Us Strangers – despite receiving six Bafta nominations – snubbed entirely.

The tragic film stars Scott as a lonely TV screenwriter who falls into a relationship with a neighbour, played by Paul Mescal – and features numerous intimate scenes.

When asked if Scott or Mescal’s families had seen the movie on the Graham Norton Show, the latter said: “With the Irish premiere, trying to allocate tickets to all the aunties and uncles is a tricky business… They’ve seen my bum before, but there is a little more going on in this movie I would say!

While Scott added: “I don't want to be there when my parents watch it!”
