Social media erupted with criticism following Thursday's announcement of Amazon Prime's selection for iconic video game character, Lara Croft.
The news that Game of Thrones legend Sophie Turner had been given the role was confirmed on September 4, but was met with an immediate backlash.
Numerous fans took to social to voice their displeasure with the casting decision.
"Participation in Game Of Thrones is the only reason she was cast. Seriously.... Nothing about Sophie indicates Lara Croft," one user wrote.

Some critics directed their frustration at the streaming platform itself, with one user declaring "Amazon is woke as s***."
Another expressed bewilderment at the choice, stating "I mean, it's kind of a weird choice, but I'll allow it."

Not all reactions were negative, however. Several fans rushed to Turner's defence on social media platforms.
"The comments here are dead a*** wrong. Sophie Turner is gonna hook us up with a good Lara," one supporter wrote.
They pointed to the streaming service's track record, adding: "Amazon has been making bangers lately. The boys, fallout. Their adaptations have been spot on. Give her a chance! She deserves it and she's beautiful any of you saying she's not needs to get a life."
Another user expressed cautious optimism, writing: "Better choice than I assumed based on who's making it." (sic)
The divided response highlights the passionate feelings surrounding the beloved gaming franchise, which has captivated audiences since the character's creation in 1996.
Amazon Prime Video revealed on Thursday that the former Game of Thrones actress will portray the adventurous archaeologist in their forthcoming television adaptation.
The series represents the inaugural major project emerging from Phoebe Waller-Bridge's exclusive arrangement with Amazon, established in 2019.
The Fleabag creator will serve as writer and creator for the programme, collaborating with co-showrunner Chad Hodge and director Jonathan Van Tulleken. Production is scheduled to commence in January 2026.
Vernon Sanders, who oversees global television for Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, characterised the protagonist as "one of the most recognisable and iconic video game characters of all time."
