Strong winds and heavy showers are set to batter Britain as Storm Nelson moves in from Spain - triggering unsettled conditions ahead of Easter.

The latest weather maps show the low pressure system sweeping in tonight and into tomorrow.


Unsettled conditions are expected to continue over the Easter weekend with a mix of showers, high winds and some sunny spells.

Rain poured down across the north and west this morning and while eastern areas will see some sun, rain will move in later this afternoon.

Northern Ireland could see up to 2.8in (70mm) of rain fall today as gales wreak havoc across northern Scotland.

A yellow weather warning for rain remains in place in Northern Ireland until 1pm today.

Storm Nelson - named by Spanish weather service Aemet - is set to bring an Easter washout in Spain and Portugal.

An alert from Aemet said: "Storm Nelson, recently named by Aemet, will give rise in the coming days to strong gusts of wind and rain in large areas of the territory in a period of great social relevance such as Holy Week."

Forecasters warn that the storm will push through low pressure across Britain.

The latest weather maps suggest that a band of rain will move east ahead of Easter.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Helen Caughey said: "It’s another very unsettled week for much of the UK, with heavy, blustery showers, longer spells of rain and also some strong winds.”

"In terms of hazards in the current forecast, we’re continuing to keep an eye on some of the expected rainfall totals as they build up through the week, with some places, including Northern Ireland, still quite sensitive to rainfall amounts due to the wet winter many have experienced.

"We will also need to monitor the winds with the potential for gales to develop around some coastal areas of the north at first, then later for some south and southwestern areas, especially as these may coincide with some high tides."

While the weather agency say they still confirming the forecast for the Easter weekend, Good Friday will likely see showers in the South and West.

Rainy conditions are set to continue in the South and West on Saturday.
