UK weather: Met Office issues amber snow and ice warnings as -10C Arctic blast sparks travel chaos

The Met Office has issued fresh amber weather warnings for snow as Britons brace for travel disruption.
Wintry conditions maintain a grip on the country bringing further snow showers and delays on the roads and on public transport as temperatures could drop to as low as -10C.
Amber alerts for snow are in place across several parts of Scotland including Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar and Orkney and Shetland from 6pm today until 10am tomorrow.
A less serious yellow alert for snow and ice covering many of the same areas is in effect until Tuesday.
The same warning has been issued for the East Midlands, West Midlands, Wales, London, south east, east of England, the south west, Wales and Yorkshire and Humber and is in place until tomorrow.
Several other yellow warnings are also in effect today, including in Northern Ireland.

The recent cold snap led to ScotRail announcing several train cancellations on Saturday in the north of Scotland.
Roads in the north-east of Scotland were also shut, with severe delays reported due to snow rifts.
Police strongly advised people in Orkney against travelling due to the conditions on the roads.
Roads around Badenoch and Strathspey in the Highlands were badly affected, with police advising against all but essential travel.

The Met Office warned that heavy snow showers could see some rural communities cut off, as well as a risk of power cuts in some areas.
Arctic air plunged much of the UK into sub-zero temperatures this week, with nearly -6C being recorded at Loch Ness on Friday night.
The Met Office said: “Snow showers are expected to continue through the weekend, being brought well inland by strong northerly winds.
“Winds should ease somewhat into Sunday, with showers by then most prevalent around coasts.

"Snow showers should finally begin to ease during Monday morning.
“With temperatures inland likely remaining below freezing through the weekend, thaw of lying snow is not expected.”
On Saturday afternoon, Network Rail Scotland said that some lines in northern Scotland were seeing snow accumulations of around 20cm.
London and North Eastern Railway said there was “major disruption” to its services north of Dundee, which was expected to continue into Sunday afternoon.
Amid the low temperatures, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued warnings across England which are in place until 10am on January 9.
The amber cold health alert means that the weather is expected to have severe impacts across health and social care services.
The alert has been issued for the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, North West, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London.
Officials expect a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions, with impacts also possible on younger age groups.
