Forecasters have admitted the prospect of a white Christmas is "highly unlikely".
Instead, northeasterly winds are expected to become "particularly strong and gusty" during the festive day, with some areas reaching up to 55mph.
The Met Office warned it could reach 65mph on exposed coasts and to the west of prominent hills.
They added: "Given the more unusual wind direction, this may lead to some disruption to transport and power supplies. Large waves will be an additional hazard on some coasts."

Locals have been warned to avoid delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus timetables.
Power cuts are also a possibility, with the Met Office advising those who could be affected to be prepared by gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items.
"If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves," the UK weather agency said.
"Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.
"Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

It was also warned that weather updates can change quickly, and it is advised that residents check news on the weather regularly.
The full list of those affected in south west England include: Bath and North East Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, Isles of Scilly, North Somerset, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay.
The full list of areas affected in Wales include: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan.
However, Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said Christmas Day would have "pretty decent" conditions for the rest of the country.
"On Christmas Day there will be a bright start in the south of England and then into Wales as well as the cloud clears," he explained.
"It will be cloudier further north, but there will be some cloud breaks starting to break through by lunchtime, and some good sunny spells establishing further north as well."
A yellow warning is issued depending on how likely or how severe the conditions are.
The Met Office confirmed that this particular warning was for a high likelihood, but low impact.
For example, disruptions to travel and potential impacts to daily routines could be considered as a yellow warning, whereas potential danger to life would be amber or even potentially red, depending on the likelihood.
