The Met Office said strong winds are also expected

The Met Office has issued multiple yellow weather warnings for heavy rain that will affect large parts of Britain over the coming days.

The warnings stretches from Saturday through to Tuesday, with forecasters predicting significant rainfall across England and Wales.

"Rain, heavy at times, is expected to develop across southwest England on Friday night and spread northeastward during Saturday before clearing into the North Sea on Saturday night," the Met Office said.

"There is uncertainty in the corridor of heaviest rainfall across England and Wales, but there is potential for 20-30 mm to fall fairly widely with 50 mm possible in places.

"Over high ground, there is a low chance of 60-80mm falling.

"Strong winds may accompany this heavy rain, particularly across eastern parts of England on Saturday night."

The Met Office also warned the heavy downpours could bring travel disruption and severe flooding to many areas.

Strong winds will accompany the downpours, with coastal regions potentially experiencing gale-force conditions.

Travel delays, power cuts and flooded roads are all possible as bands of rain sweep across the UK. Train and bus services could face cancellations if flooding occurs, whilst difficult driving conditions may force some road closures.

Some communities could even find themselves cut off if roads become impassable through flooding.

Saturday's weather warning kicks off at 6am and runs until midnight, covering a huge swathe of the country.

The affected regions include the East Midlands, East of England, London, South England, South West England, Yorkshire and Wales.

Eastern parts of England will face particularly strong winds on Saturday night as the heavy rain moves through.

Further warnings have been issued for the start of next week.

The South West and Wales face heavy rain from midnight on Monday until 3pm, whilst the South East will see downpours from 8am Monday through to 6am on Tuesday.

Parts of South Wales and South West England could see as much as 80mm of rain on Monday.

The Met Office warns spray and flooding on roads will likely lead to longer journey times, with public transport facing possible delays.

There is a small chance homes and businesses could be flooded, potentially causing damage to buildings.

The unsettled weather looks set to continue throughout the week ahead, with wet and windy conditions dominating the forecast.

Forcasters said there will be occasional drier and milder spells between the rain bands.
