Spanish cities proved to be particularly great options for a quick trip

The trend of 24-hour holidays has exploded in recent months, with the popularity of one- to two-day trips growing more quickly than extended holidays.

While this is a great way to see somewhere new without needing to spend a lot of money or book annual leave, it can seem rushed if you pick the wrong destination.

Thankfully, new research has rounded up the European cities where doing this might actually be worth your while, based on the average round-trip price, estimated transfer time from the airport and number of things to do.

The average hotel cost per night, number of restaurants and average temperatures were also considered in the data by Mozio, to find where Britons will have the best time during a quick trip.

Barcelona came out on top, mainly thanks to the number of activities that are easily accessible within 30 minutes of each other.

The experts said: "Popular amongst Britons for its vibrant food scene, historic Gothic Quarter, and pristine beaches, Barcelona is the best city in Europe for a 24-hour trip.

"Barcelona ranks 4th in the study for the number of restaurants with more than 10,400 and more than 6,000 things to do in the city, which is the 3rd highest compared to other destinations."

Prague, Brussels, Budapest and Lisbon rounded out the top five, and all locations were given a "24-hour vacation score" out of 10.

Top European cities for a 24-hour trip

  1. Barcelona (9.13)
  2. Prague (8.92)
  3. Brussels (8.89)
  4. Budapest (8.59)
  5. Lisbon (8.46)
  6. Valencia (8.37)
  7. Paris (8.25)
  8. Naples (8.25)
  9. Amsterdam (8.07)
  10. Seville (7.98)

Prague is already a popular spot for a long weekend - particularly with stag and hen dos - and it was named as the most affordable option on the list.

The experts said: "Alongside being the second-best destination for a 24-hour trip, Prague tops the table for being the most affordable.

"For Britons looking to visit Prague, the average cost of a trip is £174, while the average price of accommodation for one night is £98. Prague is the perfect location for travellers wanting medieval architecture and a generous beer selection, and is only a two-hour flight from the UK."

It's good news for Britons planning their next getaway, as a UK airport will get seven new routes going to vibrant cities, white sandy beaches and more in 2026.
