Winter can be a wonderful time for family adventures, and the UK has plenty to offer even during the colder and darker months.

Finding affordable staycation spots can be a challenge, however. Luckily, experts have rounded up the counties in England with the most free activities for families.


New analysis from experts at Outdoor Toys named the top 10 locations, and Hampshire has come out on top.

The southern county offers 501 free family activities, making it the clear winner for budget-conscious Britons. What's more, it has 460 child-friendly walking trails.

North Yorkshire has claimed the runner-up spot with 371 free activities on offer. It's a fantastic destination for cycling families, boasting 101 child-friendly bike trails – more than anywhere else in England. The county also provides 241 walking routes that wind through its stunning moors, forests, and coastal areas.

Coming in third is Surrey, which offers 339 free winter activities. Families in the South East will love its 277 walking trails, many of which are conveniently close to London.

The county also shines for cycling enthusiasts, with 50 family-friendly bike routes – that's more than four times the national average of 12. The top destinations are scattered right across England, so wherever you're based, there's something nearby.

Looking for specific trail ideas? The experts recommended "walking the easy circular route at Queen Elizabeth Country Park" in Hampshire, or "following the gentle coastal path between Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby" in North Yorkshire.

Surrey families might enjoy "taking a wintery walk around Runnymede Nature Reserve."
