A spot in County Durham has been crowned the UK's top hidden gem

As British holidaymakers look ahead to warmer weather and longer days, new research suggests the staycation boom is far from slowing down.

In fact, global Google searches for “best UK staycation” have surged by 273 per cent in the past three months, showing a growing appetite for discovering hidden gems across the country.


New data from holidaylodges.co.uk has provided some inspiration for holidaymakers looking for the next British hidden gem to visit.

It analysed one of Reddit’s most active UK travel threads to find the top five underrated destinations that Britons say are well worth a visit, with everything from nostalgic attractions to dramatic coastlines on the list.

Topping the list is Beamish Museum in County Durham, which has been crowned the UK’s favourite hidden gem. Known as The Living Museum of the North, it offers a fully immersive experience where visitors can step back in time and explore recreated streets, shops and homes from different eras.

Reddit users praised its nostalgic charm, with highlights including a traditional sweet shop and even a coal-fired chip shop.

Taking second place is The Forbidden Corner, a quirky and surreal attraction tucked away in the Yorkshire Dales. This maze-like garden is filled with tunnels, hidden chambers and unexpected surprises, making it particularly popular with families and those looking for something a little different.

Many visitors recommended pairing it with nearby attractions such as Bolton Abbey or Ingleton Waterfalls Trail for a full weekend of exploring, the analysis showed.

In third place, the picturesque village of Boscastle offers a classic Cornish escape without the crowds of more famous seaside towns. With its dramatic cliffs, charming harbour and independent cafés, it makes a great peaceful coastal break. Visitors also highlighted the unique Museum of Witchcraft and Magic as a must-see attraction.
