British holidaymakers will benefit when travelling on Lufthansa routes

Lufthansa Group has shared plans to install Starlink broadband connectivity across its entire fleet of approximately 850 aircraft.

The German aviation giant will become the largest European carrier to adopt the satellite-based internet technology, with no other airline fitting more planes with the system.

The partnership with Starlink will bring what is currently considered the fastest in-flight internet available to passengers.

The technology uses satellites positioned closer to Earth than traditional systems, delivering connection speeds comparable to ground-based internet. Both existing aircraft and new additions to the fleet will receive the upgrade as part of the company's ongoing investment in premium services.

Passengers can expect the first Starlink-equipped flights from the latter half of 2026, with the entire fleet scheduled for completion by 2029.

All passengers can take advantage of it if they sign up for the loyalty programme. The high-speed service will be complimentary for loyalty members and those registered with Travel ID, regardless of which cabin they are seated in.

The enhanced bandwidth will support video streaming, cloud-based work applications and other data-intensive activities while airborne.

Lufthansa Group described the initiative as part of broader spending on new aircraft and improved products throughout the customer journey. Additional specifics regarding the implementation are expected to be disclosed later this year.

Chief commercial officer of Lufthansa Group, Dieter Vranckx, said: "In our anniversary year, in which we are celebrating Lufthansa's 100th birthday, we have decided to introduce a new high-speed internet solution from Starlink for all our airlines.

"The Lufthansa Group is taking the next step and setting an essential milestone for the premium travel experience of our customers. Connectivity on board plays an important role today, and with Starlink, we are not only investing in the best product on the market, but also in the satisfaction of our passengers."

This is not the only airline to announce a Wi-Fi rollout in recent months. British Airways has confirmed it would introduce Starlink connectivity for all flyers, in great news for holidaymakers.

The UK flag carrier will begin fitting aircraft with the technology in 2026, offering complimentary gate-to-gate Wi-Fi to all passengers regardless of their ticket class.

Once installation is complete, travellers will be able to stream content, conduct work and stay connected across multiple devices throughout their journey.

The Starlink investment follows other recent British Airways initiatives, including new lounge openings in Miami and Dubai, the delivery of over 35 new aircraft, and AI-powered improvements that have boosted punctuality to levels not seen since 2012.
