Bamburgh beach is worth visiting at all times of the year
| GETTYBamburgh, Northumberland
Who says beach trips should be reserved for the summer? The coastal village of Bamburgh is perfect for a brisk winter walk, with its beach often named among the best in the country.
Rickett said: “Firstly, I strongly recommend considering a visit to Bamburgh in Northumberland during January. The coastal village is dominated by its stunning castle, which takes on an even more atmospheric feel during the colder months.
"Additionally, this destination boasts long stretches of pristine sandy beaches, ideal for taking a leisurely coastal walk. With fewer visitors at this time of year, it’s a unique opportunity to experience Bamburgh at its most peaceful. With years of history, incredibly scenic views and the must-visit Bamburgh Castle, there’s plenty to experience in this small coastal village."
Portree, Isle of Skye
The expert stated: “If you’re looking for a destination that feels magical during wintertime, look no further than Portree. This destination, found on the picturesque Isle of Skye, is ideal for anyone looking to relax and recharge in the new year.
"The colourful harbour, local shops and cafes are a great way to unwind during slow winter days, and they’re usually incredibly busy throughout peak and shoulder season, so January is ideal. I also recommend visiting The Lump and Apothecary Tower, an octagonal tower built in the early 1800s, offering panoramic views of the incredible Isle of Skye. If you love scenic landscapes and a chilled, but vibrant town, Portree is hard to beat in January."

Ullapool, Scottish Highlands
Heading up north? Ullapool has some of the best views in the UK, and plenty to keep active tourists entertained. Rickett said: “For a Highlands escape that feels both peaceful and memorable, Ullapool in Scotland is an excellent choice for January. Famous for its stunning scenery and breathtaking harbour, it’s an incredible destination for lovers of the outdoors, offering opportunities to hike nearby mountains, such as Stac Pollaidh, or enjoy dramatic coastal walks.
"The village also offers a range of cosy pubs and restaurants, ideal for recharging or indulging in high-quality local cuisine. While Ullapool is accessible by public transport, choosing a private tour allows visitors to explore beyond the main routes, reach more remote beauty spots, travel in comfort during the winter months, and benefit from the insight of a knowledgeable local guide."
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
She said: “Cambridge is a popular tourist destination and one of England’s most iconic cities. Known for its rich history and iconic university buildings, January offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the wonders of this well-known city without the usual crowds. With fewer visitors, it’s a brilliant time to indulge in walks along the River Cam, or warm up in many of the city’s welcoming cafes or pubs.
"For animal lovers, I strongly recommend a visit to the University Museum of Zoology, while Cambridge Market Square is suitable for purchasing a memorable trinket or keepsake. In January, the crisp winter weather provides the perfect backdrop for exploring the city at a slower, more relaxed pace."

Conwy, North Wales
For Wales, the north is often famed for its spectacular nature. Conwy and the surrounding areas have plenty of beautiful landscapes to discover. Rickett said: “In Wales, Conwy is an excellent place to unwind in the new year, especially during the quieter winter months. Similar to Bamburgh, this medieval walled town is dominated by its impressive castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it an ideal location for history enthusiasts.
"Furthermore, Conwy is home to the smallest house in Britain, while Snowdonia is also easily accessible from this town, ideal for anyone planning a hike in early 2026. If you’re looking for a place to unwind without the crowds, Conwy is a suitable place to consider in the new year."
Haworth, West Yorkshire
The last recommendation is a historical village in the north of England. The travel expert added: “Finally, Haworth, located in West Yorkshire, is my sixth recommendation for anyone seeking a quiet, cosy start to 2026. Best known for being the home of the Brontë sisters, the village and surrounding moorlands are incredibly atmospheric at this time of year.
"Here, people can explore the cobbled, Victorian streets or plan a visit to the Brontë Parsonage Museum, before warming up in one of Haworth’s traditional pubs after a crisp winter walk. There’s plenty to keep you occupied in this cosy village, without the usual busyness that comes with more well-known cities, such as London.“
"Overall, across the UK, there are some amazing destinations to consider when planning a January staycation. From Haworth in West Yorkshire to Portree on the Isle of Skye, each location offers something different, but provides everything you need to enjoy a quiet and cosy trip.”
